If you really want to do something, learn a little bit more about preservation efforts. Start here with the History Channel supported
Save Our History program. It is about preserving US historical sites, but they have a 44 page education manual you can download which may give you some ideas about applying these preservation efforts to places like Rome. Maybe some organization associated with this program can point you in the right direction for overseas preservation efforts.
