Do gupowder units work on walls on LTC 3.1
Hi as the title clearly states all i want to know if my janissary muskateers will work proplery on the walls? or should i just use them in feild battles.
I would appreciate if any replies state whcih version of the game the advice is for as i only play LTC 3.1
Re: Do gupowder units work on walls on LTC 3.1
I'm using LTC 3.1 too. I've had a custom battle with some cossack gunners defending a castle along with some other troops. From my experience some gunners will fire, those men who are not blocked by the stone bricks. Nevertheless, they seemed to get a good lot of kills in addition to the morale damage done to the enemy. You could try a custom battle to see how they work.

thanks for the reply and u r right i should have tried to use a custom battle to work it out :) unfortunately i have so limited time to play that even though i have been thinking about this for a couple of days it never occoured to me to do a custom battle lol. of course i spend most of my time thinkgin about this when i am at work so in my defence i was multitasking ;)
Re: Do gupowder units work on walls on LTC 3.1
Yeah, they work pretty well, althought the muskets blocked by the battlements never work, the ones not blocked same to make up the misfortune by completely mauling the and forcing them to rout, i made a custom siege and had around 5 groups of muskets firing to out half of their army within the first 5 minutes.

I defended a city and a castle last night and can confirm this... gunpowder units wont work at a steep angle from a wall, meaning so long as your unit is firing in a relatively straight line towards the target it will fire, but if it is on a high angle it will not.
I placed 2 musketeer units on the 2nd high wall in toledo (such a nice fortress)
where obviously they would decimate the AI troops... sadly not... they just stood there... luckily for me I had enuf cannon fodder to stop em. I also had a musketeer above the 1st gates and they fired normally.
It would seem that arrows can be shot in an arc and bullets cannot/should not be. Which would explain this phenomenom. For the city defense I had the muskets spread on the front walls and they fired normally.
I noticed that not all units appeared to be firing, ie the ones with battlements in front of them, however at the end of the battle the kills per unit was close to the norm... 1 musket unit getting 211 kills... but I didnt like it all the same:thumbsdown:
it would appear that "older" units not gunpowder are better to defend city/castle with. Arbequesers make for very expensive cannon fodder ....and since the gunpowder troops cant fire in arcs... arrows have a definite advantage here.

If you're playing as a Muslim team just use Naffatun. I couldn't believe how much carnage these guys caused. They seem to be the only unit that fires 100% properly from walls.
And for those who play on Huge unit size and cannot fit archers into the little gap above the gateway during the deployment stage - Naffatun fit in nicely.
Re: Do gupowder units work on walls on LTC 3.1
I suppose it would make sense that gunpowder units don't work too well when defending fortifications; after all, the castles are outdated and designed around the use of "old-fashioned" units and siege tactics. Hence the fact that stone walls become so ineffective when you have cannons, they are just not designed with gunpowder in mind.

Just my two cents in...
From experience you have to micromange them all to put them in positions that permit fire...in front of the murder holes some will shoot others will just watch, but no matter were you place them on walls shooters will never have a full volley shoot just some 10 20 if your lucky will shoot...but see it this way they will act as snipers :2thumbsup: :2thumbsup:
A silly way to exploit AI is in sieges in my game version which i belive to be vanilla, i sally forth with a cheep unit a.k.a. Spear militia and place them in front of my gates...AI comes within firing range and my gunners with help from towers make short work of them.
