Once you have been Excommunicated buy the Pope is there any way to get back in his good graces, and if so how long does it take.

the first question is, why would you want to? hehe.
yes, you can get back in his good graces fairly easily. simply attack non catholic factions. that seems to be the easiest way. i havent tried sending emisarries to the old boy yet to see if i could bribe my way back in. also, if the current pope dies, your status is restored, so you might want to look into assassination, if it's really important to you.

Assassinate him and all your problems go away.

Well if you really really want to be euh unexcommunicated (i.e. when other catholic factions keep sending in Crusades to you), just kill the pope. Though if he reemmerges (which will not take very long, and always in Rome, or even in Rome/Papal and more states at the same time) better withdraw or be prepared to immidiatly be excommunicated again

Well, I fretted about this in the past, but when you rule the world these matters don't bother you much.
This only effects those that are influenced by the pope. Close allies with a sword to their throat backed by a strong army are often going to choose to stick with you. Maybe this changes on expert but I have found a strong force offsets the pope.

GAH!
Conquer the Papacy, and the Pope goes the way of the dodo. It means no more Crusades for anybody AND all excommunications are void!
GAH!

Well just beware, the pope is a very persistent little fellow, he keeps reemerging, on this game (easy late 1300's) it doesn't take longer then 3-4 turns for him to reemerge. First i tried putting a big army in Rome to kick his ass as soon as he showed up, but i couldn't keep refilling that army, also i feel if i beat him a couple of times during reemerging, he comes back stronger (and attacks more provinces during reemerging). So I don't bother him, if i'm excommunicated he gets the boot, if he comes back he can have Rome, my provinces (north of Rome) have stronger defence then the ones south of rome, so he just hits south or keeps sitting in rome..

The rule for excommunications are:
If you attack the Papist you are excommunicated automatically. You will get a warning if you attack a Catholic faction who is a lot smaller than you (control about 50% less regions than you.) You can avoid actural excommuncation by not attacking or siegeing enemy castle on the second year - either assault any castles you are siegeing in the first year or redraw your troops in the second (assaulting, continue siegeing castles, attacking new regions in the second year is not allowed.) After that turn you are returned to neutral if you comply. During the 10 years time out, you are not allowed to move any of your troops onto regions belonging to the other faction - this includes region you've lost to them in the mean time and castles that are under siege (no sallying!) So if you are not sure if you can win a defensive battle, retreat, else your troop may end up trapped in the castle.
You are totally on defensive during those 10 years - you cannot reclaim lost regions. The same rules apply to the AI. If your opponent mamaged to take you down to 50% of his land owned, he'll get a warning. If he has high piety chances are he'll stop attacking. This doesn't mean you are off the hook though, you still will have to wait the 10 years out.
If the Pope dies at any time, any outstanding warnings and actual excommuncations are cancelled. If your king dies and you are not currently at war with the Papist, you'll also be let off. The not being at war bit is important, killing your king is not enough.
Tip - the Pope only keep a record of one warning at a time, if you are currently on time out against faction A, he'll not give out any extra warning against faction B, you can use that to your advantage.
