I must be missing something obvious but the entire tech tree is locked out what am I doing wrong. I'm a good 10 turns in and nothing is availible to start researching

I must be missing something obvious but the entire tech tree is locked out what am I doing wrong. I'm a good 10 turns in and nothing is availible to start researching
The idea is that you need to either build some buildings (for civil) first and conquer some other types of buildings, and for military you need to make sure you train enough troops first.
Civil - build first, conquer some more advanced provinces
Military - train troops

Hover with the mouse over, you will see details.
Farming=Granary or Grange
Industry=Forge
Economy=market town upgrade or a yellow building elsewhere
Leadership=Thing/Moot
Religious=Monastery or church
Military=Townwatch
Some of the tiers are not that useful early in game - you're better off focusing on Spears / Swords / Archers (not Cav) and then economy.
It all depends on what you want to open.
It's just important to set priorities correctly so as not to lose time!
