The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Mother-in-Law is in town. So found a few nice rib-eye steaks, marinated them in a teriyaki sauce (with worchestershire, garlic, onion, red-wine vinegar & sugar) and grilled them over charcoal, with a few mesquite chips tossed in.
She said: "Hmmm; not bad.". The ultimate compliment.
So: your preference:
charcoal
gas
other
gah

If I've got time, nothing will beat coals.
Otherwise well..darned gas. But hey, I like it better than baking!

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
ugh! this isn't even debateable! i demand you take down the poll this instant, as there should be only one choice.
(or was this a clever scheme to find the gas-grill users lurking among us? :shifty:)
but, it should be noted that natural wood charcoal is better than those awful briquettes. recognize.

Wow, Kurki. And your mother-in-law, no less. While I am still free of that particular relative, I do admire the fact that a "nice" rib-eye steak, prepared with the finese in which you prepared it, was laid on the alter of marital harmony.
I see your act as no less spiritual than when our ancestors (and in some cases, our fathers) used to cut out the finer parts of the goats and lambs, to lay them upon the alter for the Gods.
I hope your sacrifice brings with it sufficient blessings. You deserve it.
Meanwhile, I'm eating macaroni and cheese. What's wrong with this picture?

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Not a damn thing.
Mac/cheez is the norm here, too.
Gracias for your comprehension of the sacrificial nature of my burnt offering. A well-prepared (vs. well-done) hunk of cow meat thrown upon the altar of marital harmony....
well, to quote the MasterCard ad: priceless.
But, to be fair, I've had some pretty darn good burnt cow off a gas grill, weilded by an expert.
But I counter: smoke. It's not just for breakfast anymore.

Not to hijack this thread, but does anybody else eat copious amounts of Ramen noodles. I mean, the real, Shin Ramyun noodles?

I eat the 0.25$ noodles you get at H-E-B

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
oops! I put gas instead of charcoal and got it wrong. I use charcoal...

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
My friend went for convenience with a gas bbq, I worked on his girlfriend (purely in the platonic sense) and she got him to buy a coal bbq too! Tee Hee.

To me these babies are the way to go. Smokers are the best.

MMMM look at this
http://www.gardnersbarbecue.com/files/art2.jpg
A barbeque smoker gives you the best tasting meat you've ever enjoyed! Meat cooked on a smoker gives you a tender and irresistible flavor. Barbecue smokers are available in many sizes and have a variety of different features. They're great for those who enjoy entertaining guests.
Barbecue smokers are not like your traditional barbeque grill. They come with a grill, water bowl and charcoal/wood chip bowl that combine together to lock in moisture and flavor. Meats should smoke for several hours in order to achieve a spectacular flavor and juiciness. The burners are made several different types of durable materials such as cast iron and porcelain.
If any of you have eaten barbeque down south you know this is so.

Poor Kukri....
He has his mother-in-law spying on his every move!!! ~D
Oh well, I prefer the coals. A good BBQ is with coals or wood.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Coals - I need my cancerous smoke. It makes it taste gooood.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
My mother-in-law thinks I'm great, mainly becuase I do the cooking, all the DIY and carry the bags while her other son-in-law doesn't ~D
As for BBQ's, I've never had one, I might have to buy one this year.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
well Coal naturally (thats why I voted for it). But Gas is the only thing available on the Island. People don't like their homes smelling like charcoal.
-
Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
We have a gas BBQ. It's all about convenience. But I do throw in apple wood and cherry wood chips (in an aluminum foil "boat") to get a better flavour in the steaks.
No doubt at all though, coals are better. Wood fire is best. I keep all the apple wood from our jobs. Mix that with cherry and maple and you get one bomber of a cooking fire. Mighty tasty!

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Always charcoal, it creates a much better taste. ~:)

I use propane, the convenience and consistency make it easier to use. But charcoal does taste better.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Charcoal and coal are two different things you know.
And I think you mean charcoal, not coal. It makes the food taste nice and smoky, so I voted for charcoal and GAH!
-
Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Coal.
P.S. Don't quite catch how can you use "Gah" instead of it.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
From what I have heard most charcoal is treated so much that it can be pretty bad for you, depending on how much you grill this could be a problem and besides my dad makes great food over gas so I have no reason to complain about the flavor.
Gas.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Coal, but grilling over burning wood has still the most style.
-
Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Charcoal taste better to me ~;) , but sometimes gas can be more
convenient especially at large cook-out parties.

that's why you should use natural wood charcoal (aka lump charcoal). more than just possibly being 'bad' for you, the additives and bonding agents used in briquettes adversely affect the flavor of the food.

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
Charcoal.
Just the smell of the fire is good enough for me to decide. :chef:

Re: The Great Outdoor Grill Debate
