There is no depiction of this very important Japanese ritual in the game. When a general fails, or when samurai fumble up, they would AUTOMATICALLY opt to commit seppuku to save face. On the other hand, the master can stop the samurai from doing so.
I guess this is not included in the game because we would AUTOMATICALLY lose a lot of experienced troops and good generals because they fail once in a while. The nearest thing to seppuku that I could think of is DISBANDING the unit. That way, you get rid of blundering generals and units (negative honor/morale).
Any comments???

This happens to STW. I tested it a couple of times. I had a rank 0 general attack an enemy a couple of times - fumbling each time. On my 4th attempt (he was rank -3)...a message popped up - he committed seppuku because of shame and guilt.
I don't think generals commit seppuku after each defeat. Not even in real life or history.

Yeah I guess they do it only when they really suck. James Clavell's Shogun is exaggerated.
Anyway, check this link out. Very interesting. Tell me what you think.

Good stuff. can't say practice makes perfect for this, eh? hehe

Yeah, the article's implying people could still consider doing it.

Great article! I've just had my own wakizashi re-polished and it's glinting at me provocatively!! Now....who could I ask to be Kaishakunin??
Actually it's a useful new feature in MI where you can now force a failing Taisho to commit seppuku (same as being able to destroy buldings). It's better to have a 0 honour Taisho than -1 or -2.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as a member!.

yeah but disbanding means you have to wait until training is finished. but i guess units with negative honor are quite useless.
you have to feed them too.

incidentally, there is a movie for the suppuku ceremony, at least there was on the original STW game (it was present but never used in the actual game).
-
It was, there were two, one for the taisho, one for the daimyo. One takes place in a garden, the other in the generals tent thing

Seppuku happens either when the army is cut off from retreat in the strategy map and loses a battle (having no province to retreat to, that is) or when the general has extremely low honor. There have been reports of the latter happening more often if you take the general to his "home" (training) province.

Haven't seen one yet. Maybe because my generals aren't fumbling around. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

If you want to induce it in the game just take a one unit army and repeatedly invade a province, command personally but don't fight, just retreat from the battle field. Once he gets a few defeats under his belt he won't be able to resist seppuku...

Having practiced the art Iaido, I can offer my services as second to any person wishing to commit seppuku. I will make sure that you die with honor and dignity, not allowing your head to roll on the floor.
