Galleys were used for archipelago- and littoral combat in the Baltic until after Napoleon, anyway. Cheap, cheerful and well suited for such cramped waters.

What, unfamiliar with the term "cheap and cheerful" ?They were crewed by militias from the coastal and archipelago communities if that's what you mean. Nobody used unfree rowers on warships if they could help it after all.

Galley fleets were in use in the Mediterranean well into the 18th century, maybe even later.
