    Default Anyone else play Wesnoth?

Does anyone else on this board play Battle of Wesnoth? It's this week's bomb for me.

I discovered this little gem when I was looking for free online shooters and strat games and perused the invaluable Freeware sticky. Wesnoth is a sort of mixture of chess (which to my mind is still the mother of all games) and Knights & Merchants (which wasn't very intelligent and is really outdated now). It's amazingly smart for such a small doanload package (available for nearly all OS types and specs) and the gameplay is both funny and intriguing because tactics and playability clearly come before graphics.

It has a full multiplayer panel, but I haven't come round to that part yet and I don't even know if there are any servers running out there. Right now I am appropriating the mechanics and tactics of the game. But I am going to play it with my kids this weekend and hopefully we can set up some games between our two home PC's. It looks pretty easy to create a local server, even create new maps. It's all free, open source, open minds -- even the cheats are openly listed in the manual -- and they have a very active user forum.

The game sounds great, but me not being much of a computer technician, can someone explain the install? Or provide a decent link to an explanation?
I've got the source code, unzipped it, and now what? I've got to compile it, right?

Mine was just a setup file that I saved to my desktop so I can't help you.

Just installed it and started to play the tutorial - looks like a nice crossbreed between Fantasy General and Age of Wonders.

    Good find, Adrian

I'm about three or four levels into the second campaign. This is addicting.

Very interesting game with many twists. The day and night cycle, the importance of terrain and strongholds, the unit diversity and the importance of experience make for a great game.

Tip of th week: Try to fight the Undead at night with piercing weapons

I found a Mage of Light to be quite effective against undead. They can devastate them with arcane damage, radiate an aura of daylight and cure adjacent units.

Eh, thanks darkragnar! I hadn't seen that.

    But now it works!

The Mage of Light is the cornerstone of any campaign, especially against the evil and especially against the evil undead. Still I prefer to go with one or two Red Mages for the Great Mage

The Heavy Infantry is nice, but sooo slow - very bad in a fluid battle in difficult terrain...,

Good observations all round. Here is one of my own. If you don't turn down your loudspeakers, your inmates are going to be mightily irritated by the fighting loops.

    - BOING! KA-PLUNK!
    - "Ouch!"
    - SMACKITY! SMACKITY!
    - "Urrghhh.."

This is ridiculously difficult. And immensely enjoyable. Thanks for the link, Adrian.

    Anyone up for some multiplayer?

I just won the Elensefar battle (in Hero Mode, which is Medium) without a Wite Mage!

I had one toward the end though, but I didn't really need him. He took care of some undead skulls which my Elfs would have bashed in anyway.

Every time, the hardest part for me is the levelling up of my leading character. Whether he be Deoran, Konrad or someone else. They have such fragile health that you have to bring them in at juuuust the right moment to make that essential kill.

One teensy weensy mistake and it's SMACKITY! SMACK! "Urrghhh.."
