Thread: More versatile cavalry

    Default More versatile cavalry

A horse can easily hold its rider and a second man. The Romans did this rather often, not only with their velites, but also with other light infantry. You can read about Caesar doing it over and over again in CDBG.

Is there a way to, perhaps, add "siege tower" properties to cavalry, so that some infantry can "pick up" the cavalry unit, and ride on the horses along with the riders? Typically the movement rate when carrying a siege device is lowered, but I see no reason why it couldn't be raised instead. I'm guessing this is probably the only way to simulate a "mount-dismount" mechanic in the game, and I'm wondering if it would work.

I haven't played as or significantly against the Britons, but they're also supposed to have chariots they can dismount, which daunted the Romans the first time they occupied the island, because they'd use them to outmaneuver the legionaries, but they didn't actually fight while riding on them. They dismounted to engage in melee combat.

I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."

Yeah... does anyone who actually knows what they're talking about have an answer? "Hardcoded" might sound cool to kids who don't know how to code, but it doesn't actually mean anything here, since it's not the opposite of "modifiable".

What you have basically said is "I don't know how to do it". Thanks. Anyone else?

Funnily enough, Watchman does know what he's talking about. What he has said is it is hardcoded, which means that it's not possible to mod without modifying the .exe, which is illegal.

Or, to post a slightly more diplomatic reply, its because the EB Team has spent years on the project. If they haven't figured out how to legally do it then it in all likelihood cannot be done.

Besides that, if it's one thing we can't stand it's a new guy barging in here telling us how we should do things.

TC like this is the reason why I support the EB team getting mod privileges on the this board. Little fascism would keep everything in line imo.

Ok sure it is possible, if you have the codes and resources a Rome total war Devolper had.

IE-THE EB TEAM can't do it, only someone with the sourceCODE can.

Its only illegal if you get the source code from ripping the compiled binaries apart.

No, the only way it's legal is to obtain (written) permission of CA (Oz) & 3rd parties involved.

Yep, but the question isn't if you can do it legally, its if it can be done,

Considering it's theoretically possible to rewrite the game completely from scratch - sure. I daresay it's not very practical though.

Well that's all well and good, but if the EB Team started to mod the hardcoded portions of the game and distributing it on the Org, we'd see a CA rep posting an open cease and desist letter on these forums faster than you can say "No. Hardcoded. 'Nuff said."

    Hahah, yeah.

Either way, is it historically accurate for 2 people on the same horse?

About the legal bit: no, even so-called reverse-engineering is strictly prohibited. That field borders on one side to ripping binaries apart; but on the other side to simply monitoring their software for patterns & behaviour.

Sorry, just had to note that this is the second post I've read in an hour with someone trying to boss the EB team around..

    What's happening to the Forums?!?!?

But back on topic, I know it was historically accurate for Alexandrian period cavalrymen to have skirmisher ride with them...didn;t know that about the Romans though, seeing as their cavalry wasn't to good. But hey, i wasn't born 3,000 years ago.

Yes it can, it takes a team of coders a few years to reverse engineeran EXE. Look at the old games back when everything was in the EXE. It was done then, but it was also a more lax legal environment. This was the era before CD keys.
