Google have a nack for these jokes. There was Google Paper, Google Toilet Powered Broadband, Google Mental Plex, Google Romance, Google Gulp and a Google mission to the Moon a few years back.
In the past though they have tried to trick users - Gmail was released on April fools day one year, making many consider it a hoax when actually it wasn't. The .Org's TosaInu was also the master of bad timing in 2006 when he gave up his post as Forum Administrator to KukriKhaan on the 1st of April.

This year they've also launched a project to create the first human colony on Mars. It's quite comical wondering what they'll come up with and the fact that Google is a professional company makes it seem all the realistic to somebody who hasn't seen these sort of things before.

On one of the other forums I am involved in (as a Moderator) we used the wrod sensor to change everything that people typed. It lead to much hilarity, as shown in the below link:
