They usually take over a couple of adjacent settlements; I think it's where civil unrest is high. I've seen them appear in Carlisle/Lancaster in one game, Newcastle/York in another, and even Cardiff/Gloucester.

Maybe they're in Ireland - have you looked there? The English always start the game with major unrest trouble in Dublin and Derry.

Failing that, you could just swap map info with the Barons' Alliance.

If, of course, you knew where they were so you could find them to do the swap ...

I guess if he is really lucky he can spot one of their diplomats and talk to him. Of course knowing the game im sure that if you are lucky enough to find a diplomat they probably will not allow you map information

Or pull up the console thingie and type toggle_fow, find the bastards, and then type toggle_fow again. I don't know which key to press because i have a swedish keyboard, and there you press ö! (it's the one to the right of the L key)
That removes the fog of war, if you didn't know that already.

    But that's cheating!!1

I've had them in Ireland before playing as the Welsh - they're usually in Derry.

In my campaign with the Welsh they appeared; east to west: London, Oxford, Shrewsbury... So it was quite a big blow for the English... And as my preposters suggested: type the key for opening the console and use toggle_fow command...

    cheers
