Tired of the BS. I have not been able to get my trade routes to work, AND I KNOW IM DOING IT RIGHT! Every time I need to fight a huge war, I run out of cash and then the enemy, who seems to have limitless funds, just rolls on me.
    No joy.

Are your trade buildings showing income?

I prefer to generate my own income, and I always get into the 300 thousands doing so, of coarse I tend to wait a while before I fight anybody.

i have had the same trouble to be honest tradeing has not really helped me in my quest fro domaination. i ussally let the cpu run my taxes and build loads of farm lands thats really helps.

A really good thing i noticed by accident is if you put a general with a high accumen on as a govenour of a provine he will increase the farm income the higher the accumen the higher the income becomes.

Are they working, and then you lose them when a war breas out due to enemy fleet actions?

If this is the case, I would suggest that you prepare to wipe out their fleets before you attack. This is actually fairly easy because the AI doesn't build many ships (at least in my experience, in expert). As England, I had ships in every sea zone which combined with numerous master merchants was brining in TONS of money. When war broke out, I would have a few caravels on station to deal with the occasional enemy fleets. Have them attack along with any merchant ships and you will ussually be able to overpower them. Then move your various fleets to new sea zones, leaving behind the merchant, and attack again. As England, I had 3-4 carvals that were able to clean out every sea zone in just a few turns. I was fighting the Elmos and Egyptians, with a barque in every sea zone. Combined with just a few caravals, I was able to restablish control quickly. Then just leave your carvaels near enemy shipyards to deal with new ships, and you will be all set.

The key is to plan ahead. Same thing with long range amphibious invasions. Have your fleet on station to kill the enemy fleet before war breaks out.

    Good luck.

I think Bilbo is actually talking about a bug that won't allow him to set up trade routes, or at least a perceived bug. Have you had any of the nice folks here look at a save game? Let me know if you would like me to look at it. I have read of many bugs, but trade routes do not seem to be a common one.
