Normally a roman name would consist of 2 parts.
Sometimes, a man is given a third part. A nickname sort of speak.
let's say some famous ancestor of our dear Caius Flaminius would have had a red beard, and the man was so famous, they gave him a nickname to distinguish him
Our friend here would then be called Caius Flaminius Ahenobarbus :)
Although he has a third name, it was considered rude to adress him by or with his nickname.
Talking to gaius Julius Caesar, and saying "well look here Caesar, I fancy a trip to Gaul" is just plain impolite
you should say "Well look here, Gaius Julius"
of course, when calling eachother cuss names, it doesn't matter a fig to be polite sort of speak ;)
After Dentatus dies, i will either reserve me a new FM (my right as Gm, sue me :p) or I will make a forum senator, by the name of Marcus Cornelius Vulpeculus :) Member of the great patrician Cornelius clan, cognomened Vulpeculus becaus of my foxish slyness yarrrr ^^
We'll be settign up soon, just a little more patience.

got a quick question I am looking for a name of a roman senator and I don't really want him to be a roman (ethnicly speaking) though. Can you think of any non roman senators who got citizenship and entered the senate ex.. celtic, greek you get the picture(I hate romans that much).

Just kidding (its not that I hate the romans I want to be different)
There might have been during the principate, or imperial era
But certainly not at 272BC :)
Give your senator some special traits if u want to be different.
Well, after the early days and evolution of the system a roman (male) name would consist of three names, the Praenomen (the given name), the Nomen Gentile (name of the gens) and the Cognomen (name of the family within the gens). Sometimes there would be a Agnomen (nickname) which would be used instead or aditionally to the Cognomen. When adressing someone you'd either use the first name or the second and third name ("Gaius" or "Iulius Caesar"; usually in form of vocativ). Admittedly i don't know since when this was used commonly.Originally Posted by mini

From now on, you can address me as Vibius Tarquinius Barbatus (to match with the abbreviations in my avatar and my actual beard
).
My grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-father was Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the last roman king, who in his exile in Cumae, Campania, conceived another son (not that rapist Sextus, the disgrace of our noble familia) who in turn became the ancestor of my clan.
With the integration of Campania into newly-born Roman empire, my grand-grand-grand-grand-father moved to Rome and because of his bravery, wealth and good connections succeded in gaining full citizenship for his children and who entered the senatorial rank. So nobody should dare to incraminate me for the deeds of the long-gone king, or I will show you that I can be Superbus too![]()

hehe that's nice :)
Also good job on putting the nam in your signature, very handy (that's why it's in my rules :p)
It's nice you suppy your char with a bit of a background when presenting yourself.
You can do the same thing in the official thread soon, and elaborate a bit :)
Have you thought about what kind of person you'll be? Ane special traits? quirks?
Not that you have to know these already, just tryign to get you thinking ahead :D
Lvcivs Sergestvs
From one of the oldest of Roman families. However, he comes from neither great wealth nor great influence. In his youth he fought against the Samnites under the command of Dentatus. During the campaign his leg was injured, causing him to walk with a pronounced limp for the rest of his days. He his known to have both a great respect for Dentatus and a hatred towards the Samnites.

The real character was Gaius Flaminius Nepos, but I prefer to be called Caius and not Gaius. He fought HAnnibal and lost his life in one of the battles, I think it was the River Trebia.

Any idea where I might find some inspiration for my senator's name? I'm more familiar with the early middle ages, and though I have a very idea about what happened, but I have no idea what criteria there are at this moment to become a senator. I'm thinking of becoming a rather more philosophically inclined senator who is originally from rhegium and has a deep hatred for Decius the betrayer.

Well I did some wiki research, and I found a nice plebeian Gens. I'm going to be Marcvs Licinivs
The path is nameless - Lao Tse
Marcus Octavius, plebian Octavii gens, served as a tribune in the Third Samnite War. He became very patriotic over the course of his service, and strongly believes in the superority of Roma over the barbarians. He is disdaiful of Greeks and Carthaginians, and Gauls are considered by him to be subhuman. More details will be posted in the game thread.
My name is Pvblivs Valerivs Pvblicola(means freind of the people) and have been a member of the senate for just one year and I'm aged 31. I have served as a tribune and have done my part to help Rome's poor. I am not a man of great wealth, nor great power. But what I posses is empathy. It is this that sets me aprt from others in the house, past, present and undoubtedly tin the future. I serve the people, the people judge me, and the people are supreme!
Do you find something funny with the name Biggus Dickus?

I will be known as Claudius Marius!
Age 37.
Humble senator from a well known roman family, been a tribune for some time. likes to hear the public opinion and skilled at the roman army and barbarian battle tactics.like to daydream about glory and greatness, and maybe it will lead him to make mistakes.
Very like to participate in discations about war and expansion and find economic and cultural discutions rather boringbut important.
would love to see Rome rise to great power and expend.

Yikes! I was planning on not announcing my character until the proper introductions, but as others announce theirs, I have had to make more and more changes. So now I will make my claim so that other people can move around me instead![]()
I am Marcus Claudius Albinus. Aged 39 and one of the sons of the great Appius Claudius Caecus (Consul, Dictator, roads, aqueducts and educational reforms. We do reasonable rates on lawmaking too), who I'm sure you remember, died last year (if we start in 272BC anyway).
My brothers are on the path to founding new branches of the family- Caius' grandson (already shouting at the slaves) will be the first Claudius Pulcher. And my brother Tiberius Claudius Nero? No idea where his family will lead.
I don't know if I'm one of 4 brothers or 3, since this Claudius Marius turned up (how can you not know who your brothers are?). But I can assure you that the plebeian consular, Claudius Marcellus is no close relative. Although I did support his election- it's good to see the name Claudius go into the annals once more.
Hot dang, can I get in on this?
I'd like the name Publius Spurius Amandus (or is it svpposed to be Pvblivs Spvrivs Amandvs?) if it isn't already taken, I think it would suite me well, as I'm certainly publicly illegitimate and very lovable.

My videos
I am Marcellus Arminius Bonosus Age: 18
His family were originally leaders of a Celtic tribe but were absorbed by the Romans. They became plebs but worked their way up the political rankings through service in war, steadly growing stronger and more influencial. They favour the people('cough' especially celts) and despise high strung senators.
My character served the army as a junior officer for 1 year and through a lack of senior officers became a full military tribune in the south of Italy.
"Traits"
Plebian
Warlike- will often vote for militaristic ways of solving problems
Blooded
Stubborn- will rarely back down in an argument
Upsurper- many partricitans believe him to be a insolent upstart who disregards rules.
Celtic- many Romans hold him in low esteme for being a 'barbarian'

Ave, senators I am Marcellus Arminius Bonosus
Hi, I'm a bit late to the discussion, but this seems like it would be fun, so I think I'll join in.
My char is Marcus Iulius
For most of his life he's been a slacker, but he's always had a heart of gold. All he wants is for the people's lives to be easier, and for their fortunes to be lifted. He's not so radical as to call for the redistribution of wealth (this would mean the loss of his own resources) but he wants the populace to be made rich through trade and such. He's all for expansion, as expansion leads to new trade routes and revenue. He is 35 years of age, with a wife and a son.
Feel free to help correct any flaws with the story/traits
Traits -
Expansionistic - will vote for expansion 99% of the time
Populist - votes with the people in mind
Greedy - holds onto every last denarius, sesterius, and as that he can
Marcus Iulius
I object to the proposal raised by my distinguished colleague Marcus Octavius.Originally Posted by CaesarAugustus

Vibius Tarquinius Barbatus
wow debates are already starting, hehe :D
Well somewhere the end of this week, or the start of next week, we kick off!
I'm struggling with some work deadlines before my deserved holliday, that's why this is taking so long.
As to game specifics, i'm making it M/H and normal unit size
Medium campaign for reasonable diplomacy (reasonable in rtw terms) and hard battles for some challenge, but not unrealistically.
Normal unit size for all peepz who might have a lesser pc.

I object to the use of "normal" size. Most people, I believe, can play on huge size and I can play on large. Anything smaller than large makes the battles look more like skirmishes than real battles.

I concur. My laptop barely meets minimum specs and I can still play with huge size units. I just have to pause to issue orders![]()
Marcus Iulius
In the spirit of fairness, perhaps we should see if anyone does have a problem with huge unit size. We would not want to limit my potential supporters, ahem, I do of course mean fellow senatores.
But I do think that most people play on huge anyway. We all love the spectacle, and it does the people good to get out and meet foreigners in as large a group as possible.
I play on huge, but I'm playing on a new pc so I don't think it really counts![]()
However, when I was playing on the "old" pc (which isn't actually that old; I bought the new one for myself, while the other is shared by the whole family) I reduced a lot of details just to be able to play on huge, which is faaaaar better IMHO
I second Maeran however, we can just say we'll play on huge UNLESS anyone has personal objections. I mean that if someone actually says he can't handle huge and wants large units, then we change to large unit size; if anyone objects about large, we can play on normal.
If everyone that participates can handle huge, I say we should use that. But we must first wait a bit and see if someone complains.
