Are save games compatible?

Me and a friend have been doing a PBEM campaign together as KH where he would play the life of a faction ruler, then trade it to me when he dies and I would roleplay my faction leader from his city, and I'd hate to not include REAL Rhodian slingers when they were what consistently saved the day during the harsh early period. Though I guess new units in the game kinda concludes it's not possible.

Nope. General rule is that any new version of the game is not save game compatible unless we explicitly say so. Too many new things are introduced to make it so.
