LOL. If that's what you think, you haven't played it enough.
If you think all the units do the same thing...well, try taking on some Swiss Armored Pikemen with some hobilars. As they do the "same thing" it should be a draw, right?

If you feel like you're being overwhelmed in the tactical battles you should seriously consider pausing the game to give yourself some breathing space. And take greater care with your formations prior and during combat.
It's funny to read your complaints because as much as I enjoy the strategic aspect of the TW series it's the tactical battles that make them all worthwhile. There's nothing like building your own army and then leading it into battle.
