I read that they became extinct in China because their hide made such good armour, but I've never heard of living rhinos employed in battle.

The only thing I'm going to say is: Have you EVER seen any modern circus or beast tamer that can handle a rhino? Those beasts can't be tamed, even worse than elephants...

Well, for proof of the use of rhinoceros (or rhinoceros like creatures) in anceint warfare there´s always that delightful movie that was quite recently released which features the Achaemenid dynasty as the antagonist. Of course it is a bit outside EB´s timeframe.
