Having a scripted story is not a negative thing in itself. If it's a good story, having a scripted story is good. If it's not...

It's all about how it's laid up. A game can be completely linear with just one possible way out of every room (naturally not counting the way you came from) and still be absolutely awesome: all it takes is to always make it so you'll want to take just that way, that it's the one that would make sense. Sometimes a scripted story exactly what a game needs too; in fact, the reason why I love RPGs, but not MMORPGs, is because of the scripted story: it's what gives purpose to the game. If I'm just suppose to hit things till I level up, I don't see any point in playing.
