Do you think he was unlucky?

Edit: I've just read the 1st part of the wiki article... it's... It gives you the impression... is just that they won't say it straight forward what a looser he was. At least that's the impression it had on me. :(

Of course not! He was successor to the great Empire of Seleukos! How dare you even say such a thing?!

Well, he was one of the last emperors of the Seleucid Empire that actually regained some of the areas, but it was doomed to fall.

Yeah. I edited. Although I respect him, I say he was unlucky. During his reign, Parthia and Baktria broke away. Other regions revolted. Judeea revolted. Persia revolted. Media revolted and so on. Not to mention Magnesia and before that the greek campaign. I think that Magnesia was the apogee of his bad luck.

Edit: Hax say something. Don't let them monopolize this Tavern with their 7 Years War discution and other musket nonsense! Anyone... Punic Wars... something. I'd like a beet please!

Here's a better question: could Burebista of the Getae have stopped the Romans dead in their tracks, had war broken out between him and Julius Caesar?
Dacia at the height of its power (under Burebista):
    http://www.gk.ro/sarmizegetusa/regii/burebista_1.jpg

At the time Burebista had subdued all of his neighbors, and was on good terms with the Sarmatians.

    1) Acornion of Dionysios writes that: "the city of Dyonisopolis' existence depended on the good will of Burebista" which shows that he had established a strong centralized state, where his commands from Argedava (his capital) would pratically be law.

    2) Strabo implies the Getai, now united under Burebista's banner, no longer feared the Romans, writing "they crossed the danube without care, raiding from Thrace to Macedonia and Illyria."

    3) Strabo also confirms that his army was the size of 200,000 men; a number which though huge, is quite possible given the size of his kingdom and the numbers of the Thracians as affirmed by other writers.

    4) The Romans had become seriously worried by his growing strength, and Caesar planned an expedition against Burebista in 44 BC, shortly before his assassination. Incidentally, possibly because the Tarabostes no longer feared the Romans after Caesar's death, Burebista appears to have been assassinated in the same year, and his kingdom divided up among the tarabostes. However, this is not to say Burebista was unable to maintain a consolidated kingdom, since he held his borders at their greatest extent for 11 years (until his death).

I mean, if Decebal managed to resist the Romans with 14,000 men and a much smaller kingdom against a much more powerful Rome, would it have been possible for Burebista to drive the Romans off the Balkan penninsula?

Well, Burebista did raid the Balkans after the Pompey gamble failed, but he didn't pursue permanent conquest. So, yes, I think it would have been possible to drive the Romans back accross the Alps and into Asia Minor, though Im not sure if it would have lasted.

if you looked at the clown smily, you will see this is a harmless joke-unless there's something I dunno. I actually admire Antiochos-but there's always the chance to pick on him...muwahhahahahahahahaha!!!!

I'm not sure if I can agree on this. Although the Getai had at that time all the advantages the Gauls didn't (Burebista centralized the state, they had a relative strong army, with strong allies, they were prepared for war as it seems - Burabista made a deal wich implied military aid with Pompey before Pharsalus) I don't think they could have resisted the roman army at it's best. But Caesar was assassinate. If he lived, I think his next target would've been Dacia.

We don't know much about the Getai tactics on the battlefield. If you say that it could be possible for them to drive the romans from the Balkan peninsula this involves a conquest of Greece. What do we know about their siege weapons. A city in Greece it's not the same with one in Pannonia or a dalmatian city. Also the Getai made many enemies through their wars in the west and NW. Bah, this involves too many things we don't have any knowledge or control over, and they make this discussion very relative.
I would say that Burebista represent for sure the apogee of the Geto-Dacian kingdom, but I also think that Caesar's, and even more Augustus' reign, represent the apogee of the roman military.

Some other sources talk about a deal of the Getai with Parthia and even some of the German tribes (like Suevi for example) in order to make an attack on Rome at the same time (it could be pure fantasy and I don't remember the exact source atm). All I can say is that it's a shame the sources are so few and we can't make a more objective picture of this area in this period of time.

As for Decebal, 14000 it's a very small number for his army. I think a more realistic figure would be 30000 or even 60000. During the two wars against the Getai, the Roman mobilised the most vast number of forces during their entire history. I mean Trajan came with 13 or 14 legions for only 14000 barbarians? Indeed his army was smaller than the roman's, but still, this gives us a balance of 10 to 1 against Decebal wich seems an exaggeration to me.

So... what do we talk about again? Burebista or Decebal? Or in what order? We could make a tread you know?

P.S: GL with the video contest Hooah!

I meant the 2 world wars, but for the past few hundred years, someone always had something to gain from a war, I'm talking about banks or other private corporations that loaned both sides the money for weaponry, heavily indebting the all states involved. WWI and WWII were by far the most profitable.

I don't know dude, the concept of Sarmatian horse archers would have not been fun for the Romans.

I don't think either side would have won; it would have been a Vietnam except with two powers going at it.

CFR won Steaua wouldn't had deserved a win with those 3 „lighter” points. Rapid's 3rd, that's decent. On to the European cups!

R-D: I love that small clip. Says it all. I don't think any US large network would have the guts to do something like that.
