Default I always wondered what they thought...

    Some interesting news from Lesbos

Good luck to the true Lesbians, but I have to add, they'll need Cybelle on their side to win this one. It's unfortunate because there are a lot of great names and literature that came off that little island.

(posting in the Monastery because in the front room I can't imagine there would be any historical content to the thread!)

The islanders say that if they are successful they may then start to fight the word lesbian internationally........

    Naw this is more backroomish

All us men suffer in equal parts, it's our lot in life, and no man goes without a broken heart or a lost love. Like holding your dog as he takes his last breath and dies in your arms, it's a rite of passage. Unavoidable. And honestly, I can't imagine life without that depth of feeling.-Bierut

I don't think so, brothers - if only we manage to keep our exchanges monastic.

There is ground for scholarly discussion in the last paragraph. Mr Lambrou is indirectly quoted as saying that new historical research has uncovered that Sappho had a family and committed suicide for the love of a man, and hence was probably no lesbian in the sexual sense. That surprised me.

Is anyone aware of such research?

There is a legend attributed to Menander which states that Sappho threw herself off a cliff because of unrequited love for a fellow name Phaon (? starts with Phao- anway). However, I don't know of any current research that claims to back that up -- it's mostly been thrown out as a baseless fabrication.

I'll ask around a bit though, maybe there is something current on that.

Not very surprising in these parts to hear people complain about being "disgraced" by female homosexuals calling themselves lesbians.

And as if winning such a case (yeah, right) would stop people from using the word in the first place.
