DVD/CD drive problems

Just recently I've been having a lot of problems with my DVD/CD drive on my new'ish PC purchased around the end of January. Whenever I put a DVD, blank CD, or a gaming CD into the drive it either makes an odd "rrrrr" sound or nothing happens at all. It started about two weeks ago when I tried playing 24 season five and got several crashes and odd error messages with Windows Media Player. Since then it has become progressively worse, and recognizes nothing at all.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? It's bloody annoying because I can't put any of my old games onto the new computer

My system specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium - Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel Core Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Memory 2GB
DVD/CD-ROM - ATAPI DVD A DH16A1S
NVIDIA GeForce 8600GS

Any help or suggestions would be very appreciated.

There could be an error with the CD/DVD reader.

I got a simliar-ish problems.

Somehow, no idea when, my DVD/CD drive stopped recognising DVDs! It says their is no disk inside it... and the weird thing is, CDs work, just not DVDs

Does anyone of you have games with StarForce installed?
From what I hear that can destroy DVD drives and I myself had two drives which made problems reading certain DVDs, the solution is to buy a new drive of course.

Nope, no games I owned has StarForce...

Guess I'll just have to make do with no DVDs

But my 7yo CD burner is a perfect Plextor. Worth every single (extra) penny.
