LTC or Vanilla Bash the Byzantines

I can't help but notice that the strategy in LTC is to mostly destroy the byzantines. I find them incapable of dealing with a prolonged assault off the bat and attack them with anyone near.

Playing LTC early era campaign these are my opening moves for the following nations:

Scotland
Take Dublin, Caernervon and destroy the english.

England
Take Bruges, Carnervon, Dublin, Pamplona and destroy the French.

France
Take Metz, Pamplona and Push the English off the mainland retaking a majority of proper France.

Spain
Take Valencia, Pamplona, and Cordoba (regardless of who owns it) Destroy the Moors and Portugal.

Portugal
Haven't played them unfortunately.

Milan
Haven't played them either.

Venice
Take Naples From the Byzantines destroy Milan then sweep into greece and commence destroying the Byzantines.

Sicily
Take Naples From the Byzantines, take tunis and tripoli, then sweep into southern greece and destroy the Byzantines.

Denmark
Take Scandinavia, wait for Scottish/HRE excom and commence the slaughter.

HRE
Take metz, Stetten, and turtle until attacked - will not be long.

Poland
Expand West, Conquer Hungary after they attack and commence destroying the Byzantines.

Hungary
Take Iasi, beat the Byz to Sophia and destroy the Byzantines.

Byzantines
Gift Naples to the pope for alliance, destroy the turks and annihilate any Catholics who wish to waltz all over you.

Russia
Expand to Sarkel, take out Poland, Hungary, and Destroy the Byzantines

Moors
Take out Portugal and Spain, asault into france when attacked, and across to italy via sicily when attacked as well.

Turkei
Beat Egypt to Antioch, Aleppo and Baghdad. Take Tiblisi and destroy the Byzantines

Egypt
Beat Turks to Antioch and Aleppo, using Cyprus as a staging ground Destory the Byzantines.

I just find it odd that the only nations I don't attack the byzantines with are ones that are precluded from doing so geographically, or in the HRE's case need to be able to expand in all directions at a moments notice.

Any thoughts?

Well as I'm guessing you're playing the Early Era in LTC Gold, Byzantium is a big target. It's territory in Italy makes it an obvious target for Italian factions without having to worry about the Pope interfering, and likewise for Eastern European nations. And as Russia/Turks/Egypt, their territory is nearby and provides a good chance for expansion without worrying about getting a Crusade called against you(for Muslim factions of course).

So it's the combination of their starting position, their religion and the fact they are surrounded that makes them an obvious target for a lot of factions.

LTC is my favorite MTW2 Mod!!! No other mods can compare with the challange and excitement LTC provides!!!


The Byzantines make a great early target because they are Orthodox and they are spread out in the begining. It can be even more fun to let them and the other AI countries build up and then fight them tooth and nail for every province.

The Lands to Conquer mod created by Lusted/Jack Lusted. You may want to try it out if you haven't already.

Seriously, Lands to Conquer is highly recommended by me and many others.

Redoes the grand campaign in a way that stays true to it's intent.

Although I wouldn't have minded if some of the other factions introduced in Kingdoms were present, it fits the bill quite nicely if you're a touch fed up with Vanilla.
