can someone show me how to play more factions,i already have the factions you unlock,but like how do become factions like sythia.........etc..can someone show/tell me how to do this?

Firstly, ensure that the top of the file has the same basic structure as shown in the screenshot below. Small variations may exist between versions.

Bear in mind that the spaces in front of the factions are attributed to the tab key. This is to the left of the Q key on the keyboard. If no spaces exist, or they were created using the space bar, delete the existing spaces before the faction's name and press the tab key to insert the correct type of spacing.

If that doesn't work, as Sheildmaiden has said, it would be useful to know what the version of your game is.

To check this, go to the "Options" menu on the start of the game. In the top left hand corner, there should be a number. This number is the version of the game.

Once you've retrieved the version post it in this thread for us to look at.

Did you ensure your file was correctly modified? If not, check that before continuing.

I suggest you attempt patching up to v1.5 and then trying to make the modifications again. Regardless of this issue, this would be a worthwhile plan - 1.0 was of Beta/Alpha (very poor) quality according to most.

Firstly, download and install the v1.2 or v1.3 patch. Either will do, although the v1.2 patch has had minimal issues in the past.

Secondly, download and install the v1.5 patch to finish the process.

After that, attempt the modifications again. The file should have been overwritten by the process so should be perfectly clean.

I think on Caius's guid to editing the descr_strat file he mentioned somewhere that earlier versions do not work, i would suggest patching to the latest original game patch

so then i right click the icon on the right and click open and this is what what happens

Just click "Run". There is nothing in that folder that the executable will depend on. Ensure you install v1.2 or v1.3 before v1.5 though.

As Omanes said, i would just run it, and then download patches 1.2 or 1.3 then 1.5, i never installed those patches as i have the gold edition, meh

Do you have a Vista computer? They can be awkward when it comes to editing things

I've just checked the link, and it appears that the server is having a bit of trouble speed wise at the moment. This could explain why the progress metre isn't moving (if that is the case). You could try again later, or try downloading from an alternative site. You can find an alternative link to v1.2 here and v1.3 here.
