Thread: most heroic battles won?

    Default most heroic battles won?

what's the most heroic battle that you've won?

and what unit type lends itself best to these heroic victories?
    ...sorry if it's a repeat...
    -----------------------------------------------

horse archers are extremely easy to get heroic victories with...I had 90 versus 300, won and lost only 10.

horse archers are very versatile...can anyone match their versatility and propensity for heroic victories? maybe chariots? idk

As a single unit (or single unit type army) I would say that horse archers are the easiest to get "heroic" victory.

This is party due to the unability of the computer to combat them effectively and partly due to occasion where the AI has no adept counter to the horse archer (the make up of their army is wrong). The HA is pretty devastating - ask Crassius at Carrae!

The second determinant in a heroic victory is putting the "strength" of your army and comparing it to theirs. This "strength" value is created by the computer and put a higher value on some units to others. Horse archers are pretty undervalued and chariots overvalued. Thus a win with HA is seen to be "amazing" and "heroic" when you were just able to use them properly.

I have found that a defensive bridge battle with some form of Phalanx to hold teh bridge and some stronge missle (or even better onagers) types can get you a heroic victory easily. A chain rout on the bridge (preferably before they hit your line) with a few fast light horse to mop up can give the 3rd determinant in a heroic victory. Hugely distroportionate casualties.

The main thing is to rememeber that tactics that thrash the AI will not work for long against a human player.

A city's defence with militia hoplites against hordes of peltasts, archers and peasants can also give you an easy heroic victory. Those archers and peltasts often drop their missile weapons and rely on their pocket knives when assaulting a city...
Nope - no sig what so ever.

Against 750 Carthaginians i secured victory as the Roman Scipii with only 250. I had Hastati, archers and a General against many iberian swordsmen, town militia and even elephants.

Keep in mind that this was only the third time i'd played RTW and i didn't get far in the first 2.
