Marius Reforms and unit upgrade

Ok,

I've always hated basically losing all my highly experienced pre-marian units after the reforms because I can't retrain them anymore. So I was thinking... I noticed in the EDU that the general's bodyguard use an "upgrade" effect. Could this same upgrade effect be applied to other units, like Hastati and Princepes to upgrade them to Legionary cohorts?

Has anyone tried this before?

nope.... that refers to changing from the first bodyguard type specified to the second - won't change anything apart from what is selected as bodyguard unit for new generals.

If you want to be able to retrain the old units you can remove the

and not marian_reforms

part after their listing in EDB - but that will also mean that you and the AI can still build more of the original unit after the reforms (and unfortunately AI probably will!)
