So I'm making steady progress up the table thanks to a few good predictions over the past couple of days; Grizzly's miles ahead though, and alas there are no England to lose on penalties and lose him all his points.

    OK my choices for Monday:

    Austria 1-3 Germany

    Croatia 1-1 Poland

These final group games are tricky to predict, the presence of already-qualified teams is always a wildcard. Sometimes they rest their squad and field the reserves, but sometimes they use the confidence from winning the two opening games to get a clean sweep, which surely is a better omen for the knockout stages than losing your last game. I'm not sure which way Croatia will go, so I'm going to fence sit and say they have enough quality to put one past the Poles, but the Poles' extra drive will be enough for them to get one too. Meanwhile I predict Germany to bounce back from the Croatia game (they never seem to stay demoralized for long) and outclass the Austrians; they do look dangerously flimsy at the back though, so I predict Austria to put one past them. Thus, Croatia to win the group with Germany second; not a day for sure bets though.

I have a question though; anyone know of a team losing a meaningful group game going on to win the tournament?

Off the top of my head I would say Germany, German and Germany. Pick any major tournament of the last thirty years. Okay, they didn't go on to win most tournaments, but they would do very well toward the end.

Not too bad results wise for me yesterday. That damned small bear is still racing off though.

    Earwigoh!

    Czech Republic - Turkey 2 - 0
    Switzerland - Portugal 0 - 2

Maybe next time they try to play some football...

    Match Day 9 Predictions

    Czech Republic 2 - 1 Turkey

The Czechs need to win for the quarter finals, but Turkish counter-attack my do something for their hopes.

    Portugal 2 - 1 Switzerland
Portugal's second team want to show up and players like Quaresma, Nani and Almeida are unhappy in the bench, so they should do everything they can for a call. However, this is Swiss last chance to colect some points and pride...

    Matchday 9 Predictions

Turkey 1-1 Czech Republic, Turkey win on penalties (2045)

[In his grumble on learning the change in tiebreaker format - which has been in place since 2004 - Karel
Brückner made an interesting point: Despite winning all three of their last competitive penalty shootouts
without missing a single kick, it should be noted that in at least two out of three of their European exits
the Czechs have gone out being the first team to fall foul of new or previously unused rules. In 1996
they were the first team to lose to a golden goal, and in 2004 they were the first team to lose to a
silver goal. I expect this game will be tight, and the Turks need to keep the likes of Sionko in check.
Nevertheless, I believe it would be in keeping with the Czechs' tournament luck to fail in the first group
    stage penalty shootout.]

Amazing. I had been going to go with 2-2 with Turkey winning on penalties, but I though nah, there
wouldn't be four goals in this game. And there are five. GET IN THERE, LADS! The turks march on! Yas.

Great second half, thanks to the Turks who gave it everything they had - it wasn't pretty, but it was a sight for sore eyes to watch yet another team going all out. Altintop and Servet were all over the place.
    Kudos to the Anatolian lions!

Finally, the first win at a Euro for the Swiss. Granted, it was against the Portuguese B-team, but nonetheless. I think we deserved a little luck after the first two games.

Well done to Turkey! After the Swiss game the Czechs should have been warned. Just goes to show that the alleged best goalkeeper in the world is not quite invincible. Hard luck!

Congrats to Turkey, fantastic of them to come back not just from 2-0 down today but from losing their opener, quarter final well deserved. Also nice for the Swiss to get something but always a little annoying for teams who are already through to play their reserves; I guess it would have been more annoying if the game had meant anything but I really feel it's not a good omen to be losing a game in the group stages. Even if it's meaningless I kind of expect tournament winners to have a mentality which would make them not willing to lose any games at all.

Off the top of my head I would say Germany, German and Germany. Pick any major tournament of the last thirty years. Okay, they didn't go on to win most tournaments, but they would do very well toward the end.
Well they always start slowly and pick up in the knockout stage, but it's been ages since they won anything. And let's face it, they are something of an anomaly in their ability never to get demoralized; be typical if they reach the final now after being so decisively destroyed by Croatia.

Well alright, it was the closest thing I could think of. We would need die-hard footballologues like Louis or LEN to pull out the relevant statistics. From memory again, I would say that the Germans only recover from their usual initial slump if they have one or two real stars who inspire the rest of the team to pull themselves up by their own hair. As is the case with all teams (Maradona and Argentine, anyone?).

The last European Championship I watched was 1992. Germany had a silly opening game against the former USSR (1:0 thanks to Thomas Häßler in the last minute), an easy game against the demoralised Scots (2:0) and a nightmare game against the Dutch (1:3). But I believe Jürgen Klinsmann - solid, fair and a star with the panache of an artist - somehow pulled them through, and they made it to the final. Which they lost, granted. You can't win 'em all.

Got up early to watch Czechs and Turkey this morning. Went to have a shower at 2-0 because I thought it was all over. Turned it back on at 85 mins gone, and saw the incredible ending! Was disappointed with Volkan's push though, abolutely no need with the game pretty much won...

    Anyways to business...

What a day...great game between Turkey and the Czechs! Tho I do think the ref was a "little" harsh with the red card tho...seriously Koller is the biggest guy out there and goes down like a leaf in the wind...

    As for tomorrow's games:

This is a dangerous omen! As far as I can remember Germany has in every tounament they have won, lost a group game. I have no doubt that they will pull through today's match. Austria - like Switzerland - simply does not have the class to qualify fort he next round.
