As firm as possible, hate soft beds, and waterbeds are downright evil how can people sleep on that.
soft mattress nice blanket, i struggle to sleep in any other conditions to be honest, numerous times i have gone camping or slept in a car and the best i manage is an hour or two from about 0600 onwards, the one time sleeping in my friends car i ended up going for an hour and a half walk just to tire myself out a bit more.... still struggled to get to sleep after i got back....

I prefer mattresses that are neither hard nor squishy -- I like them right about in the middle in between firm and soft. For covering, I usually just go with sheets and a comforter. I sometimes add a blanket during the winter, however, particularly in January and February when it's coldest.

Although, a duvet is a must. Blankets are just uncomfortable.

I don't like the word hard... more like firm. The Firmer the better in my opinion. Mrs. Waki however prefers soft and squishy, so we HAD to buy a King so I could have a firm mattress on one side, and she could sleep on the other. Naturally, I thought the Girls would want the softer cuddly mattress and heaps of blankets as my Wife likes, but the more and more they come crawling into bed, I find that they've changed allegiance and prefer the sparse blankets and firmness of mine, rather than hers. Naturally, I get peeved every once and awhile because I'll turn over in the middle of sleep and nearly crush one of em', and then I can't fall asleep for the next hour or so trying to readjust to two little invaders on either side of me.
Voted hard mattress with sheets/blankets. I tend to think of my mattress as 'firm' rather than hard but my wife would say otherwise and she's probably more objective. Soft mattresses give me a back ache. I voted sheets/blankets, since that's the usual American thing, but I grew up with duvets and my parents still use them. It doesn't really make a difference to me.
Don't care, I can sleep anywhere at any time and always seem to be tired.
Right now the floor would be perfectly acceptable as a bed, ive had a few hours sleep, i feel ill and i have a few hours to kill before an exam. The only problem is i may get some weired looks from the other students as i curl up on the floor....

I personally love those mattresses which sort of hug around the body and adapt to the body shape. Combine that with a soft duvet and it's comparable to heaven.

Dawn is nature's way of telling you to go back to bed
Firm mattress. In the wintertime, sheets and duvet with the temperature set real low. In the summertime, just a sheet, with ceiling fan running.
Regardless, there are always dogs somewhere on the bed.![]()

It's got to be firm, I don't like sagging in the middle, and neither does my back
Preferably with a few books and a glass of whiskey within easy reach...
I normally go for sheets + blankets, as I can tuck them in at the bottom, though I quite like a duvet, the problem is finding one long enough to avoid exposing my feet![]()

All I need is a blanket and a pillow, and I can fall asleep fine on just about anything, so long as its mostly flat.

Prefer any kind of mattress with duvet and sheets, but various times have proven that any surface is adequate.

Oh. A featherbed. Got it.
They're nice, but not necessary. Anywhere. Anytime. Anyway, for me. I've slept in sagging-mattress flophouses, high-roller Las Vegas luxury beds, 10-day-old foxholes, 1-day-old deer beds, concrete highway underpasses, hard beds, soft beds, friendly beds, not-so-friendly beds.
For me, the over-riding factor is: dry. Of all the beds I've slept in/on, if it's damp or wet, sleep ain't good. It can be done, but it ain't good.
After dry, then soft. Then warm. Then occupied by a soft warm, dry, enthusiastic...![]()
Be well. Do good. Keep in touch.
A duvet with a fairly firm mattress is nice, though I honestly do find the floor quite comfortable.
duvet's are those big fluffy blankets right? I hate those things. Firm/hard mattress is best, don't know if they really make "hard" mattresses though. Some of my best nights sleep have been on the floor.
You forgot a "number of pillows" category...I go to hotels and they have a dozen ridiculous pillows on the bed. Usually fall asleep without one, it's nice in the preliminary stage though.

I prefer two staggered pillows so I can titlt my head slightly, much more comfortable. And I have a firm matress with a duvet, which is not full of feathers unlike the ones Sasaki has seen...
Since I think the firmer the better, I posted the 'hard' option. I sleep quite well on the floor, seems to do wonders for my back problems. We have a tempurpedic, which I really like, but the wife wouldn't let me get the most firm option so I sink into it too much.
The number one indicator of whether or not I'll have a good night's sleep is what's under my head. If I have good neck support I can sleep on a rock, but if my head and neck are all twisted up I'll probably end up staying awake all night.

My current bed has a soft/firm mattress and a duvet. It's quite a thin duvet though-I can't sleep if I'm even a little bit too warm.
I can sleep anywhere though, and the best nights' sleep I've had have been in a sleeping bag either under the stars or in a tent.

I'm going senile. I'm answering an Internet survey on beds.
We have a large double bed, 2 m wide and 2.10 long, with several large and small (thin) duvets, two (rolled) French pillows and an assortment of other pillows. I like everything long and slow: sex, going to sleep, sleeping in, getting up, having breakfast in bed with morning papers, smoking, discussing, listening to the birds and the crickets outside my balcony (I sleep on the first floor), and granting audience to my serfs and peasants with a scarlet nightcap on my head and a scribe at my side.

Firm mattress with duvet.
Looking forward to having a new bed when we move in two months - we will use the old bed of by wife's grandparents which is 2m wide (compared to the 1.8m we currently have) and finally also bought a new set of mattresses and pillows for it ("Tempur" - can't wait to get rid of the old ones)![]()

On the occasion i do sleep in my bed, a firm mattress, and a blanket or duvet depending how cold or warm it is. Otherwise, i'm quite happy falling asleep wherever. Numerous times while camping there has been no space in the tent, so i just sleep outside the entrance, or next to the fire. Just me, myself, and the cold hard ground. And maybe my Swedish military trenchcoat if it's a bit nippy.
