Crashing during loading screen.
It seems that often, though not always, the game experiences a crash during the pre-battle load screen.
It's always during the load screen before a battle, never anytime else, though it happens both in the campaign and in custom battles.
I am running version 1.1 and have installed all fixes.

This is a classic sign of missing sprites, which the missing sprites fix is supposed to fix. Can you run a validation to see that you've got the fixes installed correctly? Make sure to download the checklist that includes the fixes during it.
