Can anyone think of a way to alter unit names in game?
Basically I want to personalize my units as that would greatly increase the immersion and attachment to my games. Rather than having several generic units that all have the same title, being able to rename them ingame would be ideal. Imagine having an order of battle like "The Bridgeburners", "Second Spear Cohort", or "Marius's Own"!
I think it would really awesome! Has anyone tried this and/or is this a hardcoded limit of the game?

Do you mean the unit's in-game name, or the name spoken when you click on the unit in battle?
