Thread: Cloned general causes CTD

    Default Cloned general causes CTD

I'm in a Casse campaign, 250 BC, version 1.1. Clean install, no fixes or anything applied, except the vanilla sea/clouds patch. I haven't heard of this problem before, so I figured I'd post it here as a bug report. Pardon me if this is indeed a known issue, but I don't read this part of the forum too often.

Situation: A CTD occurred and after reloading about twenty times, I found out that it was caused by a Seleucid general attacking a Ptolemaic army that was besieging Antiocheia. During the AI turn, I noticed he wasn't carrying the faction flag that all captains and generals carry, which made me think he was causing the CTD. I reloaded, teleported a spy to Syria and looked for the character, accidentally stumbling upon it as it was standing totally invisibly in the midst of the desert. Hovering the cursor above him did show his name card, and I could click on him and so. But he was invisible.

This is similar to what happens when you teleport a character out of a town. It becomes an invisible clone on the campaign map, while still remaining in the settlement. So I went looking in which city the real guy was, and guess where... in Antiocheia.

I guess two identical guys in one battle must have driven the engine insane, therefore a CTD. I teleported the invisible guy to Persis, far from all battles, and thus circumvented the CTD. I've got savegames from before and after if you really want. The character in question is Artaxias Sophenikos, who is there from the start, so he's not a client ruler or anything. He's a real general, spawned from descr_strat.txt.

    Screenie:

Compare with QuintusSertorius' problem, where the faction flag also disappeared: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=104114

I found that all you need to do is move the clone to somewhere inaccessible (like that spot off the Arabian coast, or the Sahara), and wait til he dies. Once that happens, everything should go back to normal.

The only solution I see to the problem is to remove the client rulers script, and recruitable generals. It's a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Having problems getting EB2 to run? Try these solutions.

But he isn't a client ruler or a recruitable. He's one of the AS starting characters. Does the client rulers script and recruitable generals also influence those?

Oh, my mistake. I thought it happened as a recruited general or client ruler was adopted/married into the family. I have no idea what could have happened with that one. The starting characters are not affected by script, no.

No CTD, but I just got another cloned FM:

Moved him safely to Cape Horn where he can die in peace and allow things to return to normal. Hopefully.

Oh, and I should note that this is with the optimised script. Which I've used throughout, no more script-swapping for me.

Ex-client ruler or not? How old is he?

Not sure whether he's a client ruler or general, obviously he's one or the other from his single name.

He's 45, so there's perhaps a good 20 years of him languishing in exile before I can bring that stack back.

Artaxias Sophenikos is a client ruler, of Karkathiokerta to be precise. I think something got screwed up somewhere, but I don't know what exactly.
