    Default R*NT against weather

Grr... Okay, this is getting totally absurd. I haven't been able to sleep properly this whole week. The midwest, particularly my good ol' state o' Iowa, is getting absolutely hammered this spring by terrible weather. I was stuck in my rather uninhabitable basement for two hours tonight because of a tornado warning, and right now its pouring rain like God's determined to send us another great flood or something. Its rained EVERY night this week, and every time its been a thundering downpour accompanied by lots of lightening and thunder. Not to mention I'm gonna have to mow the lawn AGAIN this weekend(just did it Saturday) because the grass is growing like crazy because of all the rain. And on a more serious note, Parkersburg, IA, was nearly destroyed altogether by a tornado a week or so ago. I swear I'm gonna flip if this sorta *junk keeps continuing.

Well, tornado's suck, but what's not to like about thunderstorms? I love thunderstorms. Rain just means the park is empty of people when you go there, and it's warm enough in the summer that the wetness isn't uncomfortable. Lightning and thunder are always fun.

It's the humid, muggy weather I hate.

Thunderstorms suck when they occur EVERY night at roughly midnight to two o'clock, leaving you sleep deprived.

You should come to Aus. When we get rain we get heavy rain for a week (at least where I live). Lightning knocking out powerlines, causing powercuts. Although bucketing water out of the sump in my basement isn't fun.

Dunno about Tornadoes though, don't live far enough north.

Its one thing to rain, its another to downpour, cause floods, bringing tornadoes, etc....

I don't mind rain, its the severe thunderstorms we've been getting constantly since winter ended(about 2-3 months ago)

    Rain is good.

Rain washes away all the people which improves the outdoors immeasurably.

Plus you can go for a good run or cycle (and go really fast because there's nobody in your way) and not get uncomfortably hot or sweaty.

True, this isn't such a good idea in a thunderstorm. But then you are treated to the fantastic, awe-inspiring display of light and sound, a marvel of the natural world.

Speaking of marvels of the natural world, rain also brings about rainbows, a truly magnificent and beautiful natural spectacle and a truly elegant little piece of physics all rolled into one.

All sun does is give you sunburn.

I would never have thought saying this, but it sunny here too.
Not only is it sunny but we have a water restriction. Don't water your garden or wash your car. What is this world coming to? This is Bergen for crying out loud.

I know what you mean Sigurd. Here in southern California (70's & partly cloudy) we've been in a drought for about 3 years - our Governor just this week declared us officially in a drought. Net result? Instead of 'suggested' water conservation measures, now they're mandatory.

Now, if I could just figure out some way to capture and transport makaikhaan's excess (unwanted) Iowa rainfall out here to the left coast, I'd be one rich Org'ster.

Believe me, you'd be welcome to it. As makaikhaan's neighbor to the north, I can tell you that it's not been much better here weather-wise. I generally like thunderstorms -- they help me sleep -- but I have to admit it starts to get a little old when you've gone through 4 tornado watches/warnings in the last 2 weeks.

Midwestern thunderstorms and rain aren't an issue for me. I enjoy the show.

It's the @!#%*150-year-old midwestern house in combination with the thunderstorms that makes it not quite so much fun. If only we still lived in caves...

We're still in 10 years of drought. Though I must say this winter/spring has been peculiarly wet almost like when I was a kid, kind of nice for a change. The Water table is still way down, but its improving each year, and besides all that mandatory in California? nah actually I'm not surprised. No Mandatory water use here, we're damming up our basement windows and yard with sandbags cause the river is swollen with run off.

    makaikhaan,

have to agree with you about the constant downpours/ thunderstorms @ 2 am. couple of days ago it flooded so bad that i thought we turned the cornfields into rice paddies. LOL And a major street was completely impassable (about 5 feet of water).

what part of Iowa are you living in, I'm in central Iowa.

The truth. At least the midwest folks aren't so delusional due to over-watering that they've taken to calling rain 'liquid sunshine' as we Washingtonians do.

Thunderstorms - just put in earplugs. Rain - be glad tisn't drought.

Mowing - leave the mower out in the rain.

    Problems solved.

Queensland, Australia has been in drought in drought (the worst in over 100 years) for the last 3-4 years. The combined water supply was 15% at the lowest point. Outback Queensland had to have water shipped in. This last few months we've had less than average rainfall, but the government has actually done a bit, building a water transfer pipeline (which my brother supervised for 9 months, his first out of uni job ) and a desalination plant. We are now between 39 and 40%!!! Still on Level 6 water restrictions, you just get used to it.

    My knowledge of the restrictions:
140 Litres per person per day, no outside watering/washing/filling up the pool, 4 minute showers. If you have a rainwater tank you can do some watering. It was tough to begin with, but its ok now. WE have to hit 40% total supply before we go down to Level 5, which means 30 minutes a week of a hand held hose watering/washing/filling up the pool.

And you complain about a bit of rain

    We stole it.
The spring was so bad so we thought we needed some compensation.

More seriously, some of the weird weather is probably connected to the current La Niña.

We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

He he he, it's always so, the place which needs water has little, and those who have it, have so much of it that they get sick of it.
About 500 Km South of where I live the weather is terribly humid most of the year. And here it's dry and hot, temperature stays around 45 degrees for atleast 9 months a year. Sand, rocks and prickly plants, that is all.
