    Default Tragedies

Friday the 13th of June, 2008.

One of my classmates just died in a school expedition to the Himalayas. 10th graders do this as a requirement of the IB full diploma which states that you need to do 150 hours of CAS (Creativity, Action and Service). We have a choice of 3 trips but I chose to stay in the campus.

This classmate of mine was half American half Italian. Pretty straightforward and intelligent guy, he was also a very good soccer player with incredible acceleration, speed and dribbling skills. A very sporty guy.

He died stupid. He was with the leader from the school, expedition leader, and 2 other guides on a small plateau, because they were climbing a mountain. His helmet dropped and he went to get it. But he went running. In the earlier days it rained heavily, so he slipped on the wet grass, rolled a few times without stopping, and fell down in a steep "crevasse" for 5 meters, hitting his head on the wall and breaking his neck. He died instantly.

Everyone in the school is devastated. The girls are crying without pause, I was crying with the headmaster(!!) and another Italian along, the guys in the Himalaya trip are no comment and are coming back on Sunday... It's just so incredible. 3 weeks ago I was talking to him at dinner about his future plans...No comment.

Sorry I had to vent. I'm just shocked right now.
Ja mata, TosaInu. You will forever be remembered.

My condolences to you, your classmates, and all the families involved. Its always a terrible shock and pity that someone so young dies in a senseless accident.

Agreed Moros. Sorry to hear that edyz. The worst that's happened to me was lose my pet bird. That was a real big shame but I suppose it's nothing compared to a friend like that.

    My condolences, mate.

Just last year around this time we lost a trainee teacher/collegue at our school in a mountaineering accident. He was a young Canadian cross country runner with big plans for the future. For some strange reason he went off alone without mobile phone or telling anybody where he was going. It took us a week to realise that he was missing as he wasn't actually teaching per se but only taking care of one or two 'special cases'. Mountain rescue failed to find him and it was only by pure chance that a lost mountain climber found him six weeks after the accident. He had probably slipped and fallen a good 300 metres.

It is aways tragic to lose someone you know. I wasn't espcially close to him eventhough I saw him almost every day. Losing a friend is obviously much more devastating. Hopefully, you can all pull together and console each other and find ways in which such pointless accidents can be avoided in the future.

The last words of the last email his mum sent him ended by telling him not to fall off a mountain. Talking about premonition...

My dad told me: "You're not going to the Himalaya trip because you might trip and fall of a mountain." I followed his advice and I stayed in the campus.

    Premonition. That's how he died.

You seem to be having a rather "challenging" school year, or so it seems to me. I hope things will turn around for you soon.

Its quite upsetting to have a friend or colleague suddenly and without warning die; especially one you had spoken words with. I hope your doing okay my friend, and as CA has said, if you need to say anything more, we're here to give what we can.

    Man Edyz that's horrible...

I had a friend of my family die in a car crash about four or five years back, it was horrible. He was driving too fast and a bridge in front of him had frozen over, so his car slipped on the ice and he slammed into some trees or something off to one side of the road. It was really tough, but eventually you'll learn to live with it somehow, and at the very least you'll still have fond memories of your good friend.

But remember, it's your fate that drives things around, not your father. Not the best time to be talking about such things but if it's meant to happen it happens no matter what, mate.

It sounds very similar to a mate I had back in school, his family decided to make a safari trip to Tanzania. Was walking through the bush, apparently had a fight or something with his dad, so he got a pretty good distance from them, and got nailed by a Black Mamba. The guide knew exactly what happened, and when he got him pulled away from the snake, as he was opening the med kit to grab the anti venom, he got in a rush and spilled the med kit on the ground, none of the vials survived the fall. Got him to the hospital, and was pronounced dead on arrival. Sad story, I always felt terrible for his dad.

My condolences Edyz and all you others who have lost friends and loved ones along the way. These things show us how fragile life is, at one moment you have someone important to you and next that person is gone, but then some say that people never really die unless they are forgotten. They live on in our hearts and memories.
