Which barracks to recruit auxiliary cavalry?

I note with the Marian reforms you can recruit auxiliary cavalry in many of the provinces you have. Looking at the RV, there's a good spread of them.

One question, however, are they recruit-able only through your factional barracks? And if so, does that mean you have to have a type II government in place to recruit them (and thus be able to build that barracks)?

I ask because that's not going to fit too well with my slow Romanisation process, where I usually put a type IV (or more recently, due to client ruler issues, type III) government in place for a while before upgrading 30 years later.

I'm thinking specifically of a conquest of Gaul, which historically wasn't immediately Romanised (though it did happen quite fast in comparison to other places) and getting Germanic auxiliary cavalry to use in my campaigns there.

Yes, it requires the factional MICs and thus the Type2 government.
If you don't think the province is Romanized then you wouldn't be recruiting a Romanized unit, anyways. Just stick with the regional cavalry for regions that are roleplayed to be unRomanized.

Answering my own question, a reading of the details appears to suggest it's factional, and at quite a high level too. Might have to rely on Tolosa for all my Gallic auxiliary cavalry, since it'll be properly Romanised by the time of my Gallic campaigns.

How come there's no eastern auxilia? Were they simply not organised in such a way there? Or indeed some Greek form of auxiliary cavarly? They certainly had more than enough horses and equestrian traditions/customs to have formed some.

EDIT: Typical, a post while I was writing this one. Yep, makes sense to use regional cavalry, I'll have Tolosa and Spain producing auxiliary cavalry by the time of my Gallic Wars anyway.

I was thinking mostly of the German cavalry Caesar used to great effect, but there are German mercenary cavalry units that would work for that.

I don´t think Ceasars large bodyguard of Germanic cavalry can be called auxiliary in the EB sense. More like mercenaries, though long serving such and quite loyal ones (as long as you pay them).

I was thinking of those he used against the Remi and in the second revolt, the Germans who he gave Gallic horses to. But you're right, mercenary units would probably do the job.

Are there any German mercenary units that cause fear? I know there's the trait that frightens enemy infantry, I don't suppose there's one for cavalry?
