Default Vista problem: CTD during campaign load

    Hi

I posted this on TW Center as well, but this forum seems to be visited more.

Here’s my problem: I had EB 1.0 up and running on my Vista 64 system, but decided to do a complete reinstall to run EB 1.1 under BI 1.6.

Two attempts at reinstalling left me with the same issue: Both the standard RTW exe and the BI exe can start the game, and they can start custom battles. But when I try to load a campaign, I get a CTD while it loads.

I tried running the validation tool, but it says it can’t find the output file and asks me whether I want to create one. When I click ‘yes’, I’m left with an empty page.

This might be a long shot, but maybe it’s an issue with the Nvidia driver for my 8800 GT card, since that’s the only thing that’s changed since I ran EB 1.0

    cheers/EoE

What directory did you install RTW to?

Not to Program Files, but to my Games directory. And I can start campaigns in both vanilla RTW and BI (not that I want to though! )

and you installed EB into the same directory as RTW?

I ask because I had that problem on Vista, not being able to run campaigns if I installed it to the default directory. I now use C:\Rome for simplicity's sake, and that's never given me any problems. You might want to try that if you find no other solution.

Please post a listing of the contents of your RTW directory. In particular, you should have a folder called EB in it.

Also, for the validation, you'll need to have the Java runtime installed. Check the error message in the DOS window before the one saying to create the file.

Having problems getting EB2 to run? Try these solutions.

    Sure thing:

There's no error message in the DOS window and I'm running Java 6.0 rel 5.

I just upgraded to Nvidia driver 175.16, thinking it might help but it doesn't. For what it's worth the CTD comes consistently when approx 80% of the campaign has been loaded. I tried several factions, it's all the same.

which process did you use to make EB work with BI?

I first tried running EB with RomeTW.exe and it CTD'ed during campaign load. Then I modified the necessary files (as described thoroughly here and twcenter.net), but the exact same CTD happened with RomeTW-BI.exe. With both games I could start custom battles though.

In my second installment I also tried with RomeTW.exe first and had the same result. I then used the modified EBTrivialScript - posted at twcenter.net if I remember correctly - to run with RomeTW-BI.exe. The CTD was the same again.

I'm fairly positive it's not due to my attempt at using the BI engine.

Another thing: I had a EB 1.0 game up and running, playing as Carthage. It worked nicely and I could load the campaign (both new and saved) without any problems.

Then I got a bit bored with it and didn't touch it for weeks. Afterwards, when I tried to load the campaign again, it displayed the exact same crash behaviour as I'm experiencing now with my new EB 1.1 installation.

This leads me to believe it may be an issue with an automatic update of Vista 64 bit, my anti-virus system, or whatever else updates itself automatically. Because that (and updated graphics drivers) are the only things that have changed between an installation that worked and one that doesn't.

On the other hand: If that's true, then where are all the Vista 64 owners foaming at their mouth in rage and frustration? Playing Crysis?

So you're using a 1.0 savegame on an 1.1 installation? Perhaps you installed 1.1 in the same RTW as you had 1.0 in too? 1.1 is a full installation and should not be installed on top of 1.0...

Have you tried the other solutions in the validation thread? You could at least try to downgrade the NVidia drivers to what you had previously. Also please try to run FileMon to see what is being accessed right before crashing.

Oh no, that's a misunderstanding. My 1.0 savegame (and new campaigns) suddenly crashed the exact same way in EB 1.0 as new campaigns now do in EB 1.1.

Both my attempts at installing EB 1.1 were completely from scratch and even in different directories.

Yeah, I've gone through the other suggestions in the validation thread, but to no avail. Downgrading the Nvidia driver is a good call, I'll try that. I'll also check out FileMon (whatever it is ). Thanks!

    cheers/EoE
