Unable to start custom battle

I've encountered a very weird problem last night.
When I try to start the custom battle after finishing selecting the units, the game just returns to the faction selection screen.
It doesn't matter which map or faction I choose, the menu reverts back to the faction selection, and if I try to go to the unit selection screen nothing happens, so if I want to go to unit selection screen again I have to return to the main menu once.
I tried using both single player and multiplayer files, but it doesn't make any difference.
I honestly have no idea why this is happening.
The custom battle worked fine when I last used it few days ago.
I'm using alex.exe, city mod, TWfanatic's phalanx mod, interloper bugfix and unitsize bug fix.

Perhaps it gives you an error message when you quit the game after being bumped out to the main menu? Please check that you have -show_err in your shortcut.

I have -show_err, but it doesn't show any error message.
I can play the campaign perfectly fine, too.
