Do not save the game immediately before a battle (I mean, when choosing whether to fight or retreat). Always save while it is your turn.

However, it is most likely a rebellion CTD. See the frequent issues for ways to circumvent it and ask if anything is unclear. Tell us what you have already done when asking.
