My two cents.
Deus Ex: Invisible War was beyond terrible for a number of reasons, not the least of which was that it quite literally was a halfarsed port from the console. It FELT and played like it belonged on the console with a joypad. The other reason is that they did indeed gut the game, and removed nearly all of the depth and complexity that made the original good. If you absolutely have to try it out, at least do yourself the favor of installing the fan-made graphics patch, just Google for it.
If you haven't, you could always try System Shock 2. There's a compilation patch out recently that fixes most of the Windows XP compatibility issues. This and Thief 1/2 are probably as close as you're going to get to what you're looking for.
Personally, I did not like Thief 3 at all, again mainly because of the engine. It just felt and played like a horrible port from the console, thus I never got too far into it. Others here have enjoyed it though, so perhaps that might be an option for you.
