Thief series or Deus Ex 2 (which, despite naysayers, is actually pretty good if you ignore the absence of RPG elements)

I actually own a copy of Invisible war but never played it because of the negative hype, my computer also wiped out i think it may be able to handle it now though.... may have to give it another go... did warren spector (sp?) make IW as well ? or was it different people working on it ?

May have to look into thief as well.. i enjoyed the demo of the first one when i played it years ago never got around to buying it though.... whats the latest one thief 3 ?

    My two cents.

Deus Ex: Invisible War was beyond terrible for a number of reasons, not the least of which was that it quite literally was a halfarsed port from the console. It FELT and played like it belonged on the console with a joypad. The other reason is that they did indeed gut the game, and removed nearly all of the depth and complexity that made the original good. If you absolutely have to try it out, at least do yourself the favor of installing the fan-made graphics patch, just Google for it.

If you haven't, you could always try System Shock 2. There's a compilation patch out recently that fixes most of the Windows XP compatibility issues. This and Thief 1/2 are probably as close as you're going to get to what you're looking for.

Personally, I did not like Thief 3 at all, again mainly because of the engine. It just felt and played like a horrible port from the console, thus I never got too far into it. Others here have enjoyed it though, so perhaps that might be an option for you.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Very similar style of gameplay, firstperson RPG.

Invisible War is absolutily worth playing, most dissapointing sequel ever but still good game with a few flashes of brilliance.

I think I'm the only person on the internet who enjoyed Invisible War. I'd say it's definitely worth playing. Oddly enough, I liked it and breezed through it, but I just can't seem to get into the original Deus Ex.

but I just can't seem to get into the original Deus Ex.

    What ?! blasphemy!

I would say the first level or two are a bit slow (i loved them but compared to the rest of the game) but after that it starts to get very intresting.... it has an amazing storyline, also the weapons and augs you get later on are more entertaining too!

The difficulty level has a jump as well around level 3-4

Plus you only have to kill 2 people in the game, awesome. I love playing like a total wuss, baton to the back gnight. It's aweomness needs some time to sink in, had to force myselve through the first levels so I kinda on the same level. It gets really interesting after Hell's Kitchen. Unlike most I love Tokyo, so incredibly atmospheric and not that much combat, more adventuring.

Officially you only actually had to kill one person (depending on ending) but there was actually a way to complete the game without killing that person, video is on youtube if your intrested, involves catching a gas grenade and the exit door gets opened for you....

It was Hong Kong not Tokyo, i liked it somewhat but i think it was mainly all the loading areas that did my head in, my least favourite part would have to be right at the start of the Paris level...

GAH. Hongkong of course. Been playing too much (if there is such a thing) The world end with You and that is situated in Tokyo. But comming from a fellow Deus Ex fan, go play IW it's not the same but still the closest you can get. When it actually does feel like a Deus-Ex it's a gift from heaven, and some of it's best settings rival those of the first, especially an creepy as hell artic base is absolutily awesome. You will be dissapointed but have a good time nonetheless.

Loved the Hong Kong bit too. Plenty of new characters, didn't know who was double-dealing who. Staying in taht area captured the feeling of unravelling a conspiracy, and the setting was great.

I missed out on the bit because

I accidently discovered that paper lantern in maggie chows apartment on the first visit, i was just looking around...

that probably made the level less impressive first time round..

A fellow fan of the original here. Quite surprised to find so many fans, everyone I know hates it. The atmosphere is excellent, and I loved playing as a hacker....

My favourite level is definitely Hell's Kitchen.

A quick search of The Arena should find some topics with praise.

Mind you, it's not perfect. When it's at it's best it's absolutely fantastic; at some points, however, you will be frustrated. Thankfully the great outweighs the iffy.

If he does, should be careful - one doesn't just patch, but makes a whole load of gameplay changes which I didn't much like.

Do NOT get the unofficial patch!
Get the True Patch by tessmage instead. It has actual bug fixes instead of crappy gameplay changes.
