It's related to the way the forum now provides the browser with information about RSS feeds. The old forum (pre-update) told the browser to go to the RSS 0.9 feed, while the new forum (post-update) tells it to go to the RSS 2.0 feed.

The RSS 0.9 feed contains a DTD (Document Type Definition) which resulted in Internet Explorer, quite strangely, ignoring the page and providing an error message. The RSS 2.0 feed lacks a DTD, which results in the absence of the problem.

Both feeds have always existed, although originally the RSS 2.0 feed was not directly accessible from the browser's RSS feed button and the URL had to be entered into the location/address bar. The same also applied to individual forum's individual RSS feed, which originally also had to be typed into bar. These individual RSS feeds now also are accessible from the button.

The key difference between the two is the way they display the information. RSS 2.0 provides text as well as a title for an entry, while RSS 0.9 just provides a title.

Hope you can understand this BTW - I'm not very good at explaining this sort of thing

Very helpful, thanks Omanes. I used to know these sorts of things but now I work for an American university whose IT has become more and more owned by Microsoft - and my knowledge of anything invented outside the gleaming walls of Redmond has vanished. Rather irritating to be honest.

But that's neither here nor there, is it?
