How do you assign an heir to a unit in the campaign? It says to just create a unit and he will be assigned to it, but that doesn't work. I make a new unit, and it has some other general.
Any ideas?

Try again. The game sometimes assigns random "special generals" to newly completed units, and these take precedence over any heirs. The next unit you build should have a heir, though. You'll know he's been assigned once you receive the "your heir has come of age and is ready to serve you" message.
Come to think of it, that message would be markedly more useful if it appeared when the heir actually has come of age, not when you've already assigned him to some unit. Might help to reduce the occurrence of those "Takeda Shingen as Yari Ashigaru" events.

The heir needs to come of age, and will then join a unit soon after. He doesn't seem to join immediately but within a few turns. Eventually he will, just be careful, don't get him stuck wiht Yari ashi or something a Unit like NO Dachi that die quickly.

If you keep track of your heir's age, you will know what year he is going to turn 17. In that year, make sure you save every turn so that you can avoid the "ashigaru as heir event" (hehe). This also allows you to build units normally until you know the season in which the heir matures.
When choosing units to assign the heir to, consider selecting a unit that can still do you some good on the battlefield and has decent morale. In the early game, archers are a good selection if you are not Tekeda. Otherwise, I usually choose Yari Cavalry, as they can chase down routing units. Never pick Cavalry Archers because they have a very low morale IMHO. I will also sometimes pick Monks if they are built in high-honor provinces. A Monk general can really swing a battle your way in a pinch.
Thanks for the replies.
I don't know if I would pick a monk unit for my heir because I really like to throw the monks into the fray. Yari Cavalry or Heavy cavalary sounds like a good idea, although I have always made my best generals archers in the past.
If you can remember the season that your heir was born then that will be the season in his 17th year that he will come of age.He will be assigned to the unit that is trained in your western-most province. In other words, if you have a horse dojo in Shinano and a spear dojo in Mino, and both are training troops, your heir will be Yari Samurai.Sometimes you may want to suspend training in that western-most province if you don't want your heir in a specific unit.
Satsuma province with the Shimazu clan is a good example of this. You get a bonus for No-Dachi units in that province and it is about as far west as you can get in Japan.I like No-Dachi units, but not as heirs. That's why it is important to remember the season the heir was born,so you can still train No-Dachi till that season. As Jackson stated, saving each season in his 17th year is a good idea in case you goof.Nothing worse than an Ashiguru heir.
