How does one change terrain type on the battle map editor?

Pretty simple question. In this area, the battle editor doesn't appear to work like it did in RTW. I tried to change areas of ground from one type of landscape to another (e.g., trees to grass or sand to snow) but failed dismally. I especially want to be able to remove annoying trees that are in my way, but in general I just want to know how to modify terrain.

Hello? Anyone home? Surely someone has used the battle map editor!

Here’s what’s going on: it says I can add or remove trees with the landscape texture tool and then press the update tree outline button and viola! Trees are added or removed. But this isn’t working--I can change the landscape texture, but when I hit the update tree outlines button, nothing happens. It should add trees where I painted forest texture and remove trees where I painted grass texture (etc.) but it doesn’t.
