    Default crash reports please

    many thanks to all those who logged on this morning and ran the mod,

    we had 2 extra patches to test this morning,
    and we all had both installed concurrently,

    so we now have to figure out wether it was 8.1 or tms that caused the crash

    facts
    • we were able to play 4v4 using tms (2008 samwar) japanes clans (any clans),
    • we had a few 4v4's that went without a hitch as long as we all stayed with japanese units,
      (+)we had NO desyncs under those conditions
    • as soon as more than 2 people existed in a match
      (+)AND someone picked mongols, and it seemed not to matter which particular unit, the game would crash as the battle map loading phase.
    • we tried 1v1 with all mongol units on the field, and that worked,
    • 2v1 (and above) - crashed
    • we played both 8.1 and 2008 as japanese and all worked fine
    • we were UNABLE to test beta8 + TMS -(without) 8.1 > due to time contraints
    • we were UNABLE to test beta8 + 8.1 -(without) TMS > due to time contraints


    any other observations peoples??

    i noticed that the unit prod has TWO entries for the "mongol imposters",
    would that cause such a problem as we saw this morning??

    (BTW i can be online from 1900 any day of the week at the moment)

    My addition to your list barocca....

    The HOST pc being responsible for the crashes was ruled out by two of us Hosting test games.

    Player v Player, whichever combination of any two Players, ran the test ok. It was the introduction of a Third or more Players that seemed to be the problem.

    Even tests with all of the same unit (mongol) in 1v1 run ok.

    A Process of elimination was a thought.
    Each Player in turn joining a 1v1 to see if there was a mis-match or conflict with 'install' that was causing the 'crash'.

    Trying to help put a finger on the problem.

    Has there been any problems with the 8.1 MP by it's self, without the Mongol add?

    We did positively test 2008SW but we did not introduce Mongols as one of the factions in these games. Neither did we test more than one player taking Mongols while the others took Japanese. The only Mongol tests run were ALL Mongol games. When the first Sengoku era 2008SW game ran ok, we should have introduced the Mongols one player at a time. We still don't know if 4 Mongol v 4 Japan will run. I am able to test any night but on Wednesday and Friday I can't get online much before 10pm (BST)

    Edit: Correction. One 3v2 Japan/Mongol where Puzz3D dropped and Barocca was having GPU trouble but only 2 players took Mongols in that game and we know that 2 Mongol armies tested ok

    Actually first game involving Mongols were 4 mongols v 4 japanese and thats crashed to desk.

    we did run some games on the 8.1 unit prod = no desyncs
    and jap players (no mognols) on tms unit also = no desyncs
    and 1 3v2 jap v mongol (on tms), where a desync occured (my gpu was after puzz dropped)

    problem seems to be mongols,
    wondering if multiple entries in the unit prod file was cause of that,
    (seem to recall an early bug regarding multi unit occurences and non matching deadpage caused MP problems)


    have asked tms to run a set of configuration tests on his lan,
    beta8+8.1
    beta8+tms
    beta8+8.1+tms
    beta8+tms(with dupe entries removed)
    beta8+8.1+tms(with dupe entries removed)

    as you can imagine that may take a bit of doing

    also i need to know IN ADVANCE please when peoples will be online so that i can get up,
    it is 4am local we are talking about,
    getting up at 4am is no problem for me, but i need to know to do so in advance please

    Sorry, couldn't make it on time today (Sunday). Did intend to do so but didn't work out.

    I think that the SP game is a bit more forgiving than the MP part.
    I'll check the unit prod for the Mongols again, it seems strange that it works with 2 players but not with more. We'll have to create a new unit_prod for the Mongols anyway once we're finished with the imported animations but lessons could be learned from TMS unit file.

    It also seems that 8.1 works nicely without desyncs. Which is very good.
    Any successful games after I left on Saturday?
    Any successful games played with 8.1 on Sunday?

    CBR and I were in the lobby from 19:00 gmt to 21:00 gmt. We tested 8.0 + TMS with 16 units using all the Mongol types and a 1v1 worked. We couldn't test anything greater than 1v1.

    (which is 4am tue 15/7 local)
    i will have to leave at 2300 GMT (2400/0000 DST-UK) else i'll turn into a pumpkin...

    TMS is playing MP, just over a lan, not the internet.

    So far he has tested everything we already have, without any crashes,
    beta8+ ras'8.1+ tms'mongols

    as a precaution can everyone confirm that they are using patch version 201,
    the CD executable at 6,736,573 bytes,
    VI 201 patch

    IF you need help playing the game with that file, ie you have the DVD or something SIMPLY message me and i can point you in the right direction for a solution,

    but i'd really like us all to use the same EXE,

    I am using patch version 201, and the CD executable at 6,736,573 bytes.

    Was on Sunday to late to help, but will try harder this next weekend to be earlier.

    i am racking my brains trying to imagine why the game crashes online, but not in a lan.

    all i can imagine is that the mongols arw a different religion to the samurai

    if people could install a copy of beta 8 and TMS_mongols only, not ras_8.1,

    i am going to have a quick look at the unit prod and startpos and see if i can remove the duplicated units,

    then see about making mongols the same religion, but restrict the mongol units by faction

    here is another way to add the mongol units,
    merely edited which factions can have what and made mongols same religion as japanese

    would like to test this as well,

    so install a fresh mtw/vi,
    install beta 8
    add NO other patches, mods or addons,
    add this july 2008 mongols
    sinply extract and drop inside mtw/beta folder, you MUST get a request to overwrite campmap folder, ACCEPT
    (if you dont get asked you have not done it right)


    i would like to test :- beta8 + tms

    and :- beta8 + july mongols

    I thought 8.1 patch included the mp desync fix for Sengoku, wouldn't going back to 8.0 just reintroduce the old bug?
    The problems experienced with Mongols just sounds like a repeat of the same desync bug

    I have the correct 2.01 install.

    I have added a Beta_8.0 +(plus)TMS (2008) fresh install.
    Will add a Beta_8.0 + july 2008 mongols fresh install this afternoon.

    I will be online at 19.00hrs (UK) tonight Monday to help test both versions.

    internet in australia has been problematic since noon, and non-existant from 8am to noon,
    8am we were just lining up for another test when down went the optus backbone,
    sorry guys,

    we did have disconnects and each and every one was caused by ME being the only player on a team,
    we are currently leaning towards hardware issues, possibly to do with routers, possibly to do with ports,
    in a short while i am going to forward the MTW, VI and gamespy posts, PLUS 4 ports on either side.

    Then tomorrow morning we will see if me being a solo player still cause crashes.

    just to be clear - each and every time that i had teammates there was no crash,
    ALL crashes occured when i was solo...
    (playing as mongols)
    we KNOW similar was happening saturday/sunday
    - i suspect some modern routers will not allow (or limit) people talking "into" MTW,
    hopefully by opening a range of ports around each "required" port that the router can find places to let everybody talk to everybody.
    (I have a DG834G v3)


    i will be online (tues 15 july) at 1800 GMT (1900 DST-UK)
    (which is 4am wed 16/7 local)
    i will have to leave at 2000 GMT (6am local) (wake and breakfast family)...
    (can return between 7am and 8am local) (2100 to 2200 DST-UK) (take family to work/school)
    and then for as long as needed from 9am local (2300 DST-UK) (having an RDO)

    I wouldn't rule out the hiccup with the net as a factor either. Didn't we get a crash where you and I were on the attacking side?

    the net glitch was a sudden stop,
    it seems there is ONE(1) cable between QLD and Sydney,
    and 1(ONE) backup microwave dish,
    the cable got cut by an excavator and as soon as the load was diverted to microwave the motherboard blew up,
    QLD was in it's own little universe for much of the day BECAUSE Mobile and Landline phone services also rely on the fibre cable...
    as soon as the cable was cut it was game over man...


    TMS reports he cannot get 8.1, TMS or July_2008 to crash on LAN,
    yet we have all seen them crash, when more than 2 player, on WAN,
    the difference is we are using routers on WAN
    (maybe we could hamachi mtw, but that will take some investigation)
    while we have seen some large games work, we have also seen them crash,

    i am looking at the mongol units and i cannot find missing files or data entries
    (yet - I cannot guarantee they are 100% = not my area expertise),
    so lets see if we can determine if the problem is hardware...

    any ideas exactly HOW to do that?
    (have assigned my machine a hard (lan/internal) IP and opened a range of ports on the router based around those required for mtw/vi and gamespy -that should cover all bases...)

    The problem with 8.1 + TMS with more than 2 players when Mongols are used is a hard crash to desktop by all the players while the loading bar is on the screen as the game transitions to the battle map.

    but CTD does not happen on lan, tms all works fine,

    i rewrote the unit prod and startpos file so that mongols are same religion, and we still got CTD online, yet all works on lan,

    if tomorrows open ports test fails then the next thing i will do is give the mongol units to a jap faction and see what happens,

    fankly there is not much to adding an existing unit to the game, remember these are medieval units, we are merely giving them to a different faction,
    there is no obvious game related cause for the crash.
    it does not happen in lan,
    that leaves, to my mind, only one thing- hardware.

    BY THE WAY, we all saw the devs run 3 players from 1 internet connection,
    yet we cannot, (second player boots first player off gamespy and so on)
    how did they do that???

    To add to the crash theory...

    I am the player Hosting the games....

    I reported during testing last night that I noticed that the Load Bar (the yellow) was only half way across when the game CDT. So in theory we didn't actually get to the 'battlefield'?

    If need be, I have a Hamachi game setup. A few of us were using it online.
    I haven't tried it online since using this router (BT HomeHub) but had set the Hamachi required ports.
    It would need to be tested that my connection and games are visible

    I will be online at 19.00 hrs (UK-BST) same as last night/early morning AUS.

    No one got to the battlefield. A different host is needed to eliminate the host as the possible cause of the problem.

    with only Jochi, Orda and myself showing up to test things it is not possible to cover all the bases,
    i will be away tomorrow morning and unable to take part in testing.

    IN THE MEANTIME i will give the first japanese faction Mongol Units, and deny them japanese units,
    i will also de-activate the mongol faction.
    This will eliminate the units themselves as being the cause.

    THEN options include
    move the mongols to a different faction slot (thinking maybe fn_07 HAS TO BE pagan),
    reinvestigate why pagan religion is not working (it should work,it works for viking faction),
    then move the mongols back to slot 7 but with japanese units only,
    then add mongol units to mongol faction.

    i will be asking for assitance to test all these variants over the next couple of weeks,
    so please stay near your PC's and ready to defend yourselves...
    (i am afraid Jochi, Orda and I are getting rather "handy" with the current mongol lineup - gun duellists beware, you can be mangled by mongols)

    Barocca can now host too. He had a reading of 25% when a CDT occured.

    The time zones do make it difficult for all players to attend but, the more that can be online together at pre arranged times for testing the better. 3v3 and 4v4 may be an advantage.

    Platform & Installation info:
    NVidiaGEForce7900 graphics card
    Win XP SP2
    2.16GHz CPU, 2GB RAM
    Samurai Warlords 8.1 + Sound patch + maps patch

    Error conditions:
    Select Single Player, Campaign, Easy, (all other default settings)
    Select Takeda clan

    Error Symptom:

    Splash screen with progress bar appears
    Progress bar continues, reaches 100%
    App crashes (system does not freeze)

    From error log:
    C:\Source\VikingsPatch\Crusaders_TW\main3d_1.cpp(1929) : DirectX call : DDERR_SURFACELOST

    Other notes:
    This does not happen with all clans.

    After choosing Single Player, New Campaign and Easy Difficulty, make sure you highlight Samurai Warlords on the next screen before pressing Continue. Leaving it on the default "Samurai Wars MP" will produce a crash when loading the campaign map, and don't use the "2008 Samurai Warlords" selection because it isn't finished.

    Other than that, I don't know what would be causing a clan specific crash unless one of the config files has been altered. You could try making another install of just the Samurai Warlords 8. The 8.1 is only for multiplayer, and the sound mod and maps aren't necessary.
