For once the South African government comes up with a good idea. Now, if y'all can put aside your prejudices and look at this from a entirely logical and rational angle, you'll see why.

The World Cup will bring a lot of emotionally charged, potentially drunk men, most of which will probably have money to spend. Now, in this state many will be looking to engage in sex. Now, as South Africa currently stands, with a high AIDS and HIV rate and illegal prostitution this could potentially be a disaster.

If it is illegal, it is thus not properly regulated, and the "working ladies" will no doubt not be checked for disease. By making it legal the Government can bring in proper legislation that will mean prostitutes will have to have medical examinations and their brothels properly sanitized.

I've never really seen what's so wrong about it anyway. All it does is make the conditions safer for those involved.

Doesn't this always happen, though? World Cup venues make allowance for/tolerate and regulate prostitution - at least for the duration of the matches?

I kinda remember there being a minor flap over Germany's accomodating measures. And I dimly recall reading about similar provisions being made in Korea in '02.

Idle curiosity: I wonder if FIFA has a checklist, including: "Prospective Host country regulates sex-trade? {yes}{no}"

But would it really make it much safer though? I doubt drunken football fans would stop to think if they had picked a legal venue or not.

Also the fact that the official who suggested legalising prostitution resigned shortly after on corruption charges is a little suspicious.

And as for women using their own bodies, doesn't there tend to be coercion involved in these kinds of circles? Or just taking advantage of their drug habits etc.
