Ok .. I understand that when my men are engaged in melee combat and my missile units are firing into the fray that my units stand just as much chance to get hit as theirs ...

    The funny thing is ...

My front line of spear units was set up and holding the lines. Behind them were the lines of arbalesters pounding away on the appraoching ranks of enemy units.

The middle of my line of failing and I was afraid that it would soon fall ... so I sent reinforcments up the middle. They had to first pass the arbs who were firing into the fray ... as my unit of MAA past through the arb unit they were shot! I will note that the MAA were NOT in the fray of things, they were simply walking by the arbs ... I understand freindly fire when they are in the fay by damn if my men dont AIM befre shooting.

Friendly fire can happen along any point of the missile trajectory, since missiles are not just calculated kills, but have actual flight paths. It is very likely to happen if you run your unit through a missile unit while they are firing. The game calculates whether the projectile will hit anything very soon after the release, and if the answer is yes, that man won't fire (that's why fewer men will fire in the woods). However, if men are moving in front of or through the missile unit, the calculation may occur before they actually get into the "killzone", and therefore the projectile is released and your men buy it. Furthermore, due to their flat trajectories, xbows and arbs are more likely to cause friendly fire in general.

hahaha here's a funny story, once i was invading scotland, my Longbows were taking aim at the rebels. Then I told my king and his son to charge downhill at them. Well both the king and his son walked in front of the Longbows just as they were , and they both got shot in the head! well my men got scared and retreated. I can see it now" come on son CHARGE! yaaaaaahh!!! schwoop!

    Think of it this way.
You run in front of a car when it's going down the highway and then wonder why you got hit.
