Thread: How to use a sling?

  1. #1

Default How to use a sling?

I have made a sling, but how do I use it? At the moment I spin it round in a vertical cricle two or three times then release it, I can get it in the desired vertical plane most of the time but I dont have much controll over the angle (I have had a near miss with some windows!). How do I do it properly, and is the method used by EB slingers in battles accurate?

As far as the sling is concern the EB team seem to have it right, yet again. Slingers applied as support are best employed against, infantry based armies. Here the only reason to use the bow is either to kill the enemy leader or panic enemy troops with fire. This type of missile troop (foot based sling or bow), not nearly as effective in mobile combat. As to your question, when used overhead, you must elongate (or kind of whip) the last orbit in the direction of the target, then upon the actual release, point with your sling arm and hand just to the right of the target, as if you're throwing a stone. You do this by dropping your sling hand behind your head then jerking it foreward as you lower your torso, both in the direction of the target. But it is very important that you should know this move must be very quick. I suggest that if you're bent on doing this, at first try it very slow and at side arm, rather than over head, until you become familiar with the move.

However, this is a very dangerous weapon and I suggest you not use it, as one can very easily harm theirself or others.

So, is the overhead motion more effective than circling the entire arm? Because it seems like it would be the opposite, as there would be more power in swinging the entire arm than just the sling. Or is it a matter of speed?

i made a sling to fire snowballs at kids from the roof of my school in grade 7

    deadly effectiveness >:D

overhand works best. i never practiced with too many rocks since well... i didnt want to actually KILL them... errr well some of them but thats a story for another time lmao

start slow, swing it around with your wrist at waist level, then once brought up to speed, swing your arm around overhand, but not 90 degrees to the ground, but more at an angle.

i suggest you find a secluded spot and try variations of that to find what works best for you, due to differences in height, and the mass of your arm, quality of the sling itself and the mass and shape of the rocks/bullets you are firing.

I think increasing the speed increase the power of it
    q=mxv
since i dont know which are the better words to describe that formula i just translated literally
    amount of movement=mass x speed

so therefore, increasing the speed would increase the power (amount of movement)

not sure if this is right though

Length, speed, and the direction of the release is everything. Its like a helicopter blade; the center will move relatively slow while the tip can turn near the speed of sound.

As I understand it the main power is through a whipping action and swinging it is not required, nor does it make it that much more effective. The main benefit of not swinging before release, ie the overhand "greek" slinging method, is that when used as a hunting weapon it won't scare the prey through unnecessary movement.

however swinging it in a circle allows all the slingers in a unit ready themselves so they can all release together. it also helps yourself (if you are an inexperienced that is) prepare to fire, and helps you get used to it.

most slingers weren't amazingly experienced slingers, they might have some experience from hunting, but most were just levies drawn up in times of war.

    Right,

when a kid, I and a couple of friends, used to hunt rabbits with the sling. That was a ways back, before we got our hands on guns, and I don't recall who showed us how use it. So I had to go out to the desert, which isn't that far nowadays, to fire off a few. I was surprised, it came back quickly, I was soon hitting the wide side of a tree in no time. But, Foot is right, you can use just one quick move, still I use three; two quick elongated turns and a quick whip, maybe that’s just how I learn to use it.

    Right,

dogs, several of them, some proved fragile creatures. There were a number of them, all with the same name, Bo-bow. Rattlesnakes got one, and I never found two, but I'm sure a lion took another. A lot of people here don't realize how many lions there are in the mountains, just two miles from the center of the town I live in. When I go to a local store there are always people putting up these 'have you seen' posters, with the picture of a Fluffy or Fido. I don't have the heart to tell them that most likely a lion took them. This country can be a bit hard on some animals, and of course the unprepared and those not self aware. I think last year about 200 people perished in the desert, not sure what the headcount is up to this year?

Just remembered one dog was killed when a horse kicked him in the head, and another was strangled by a lawn chair during a dust storm. Strangest thing, somehow he got his neck caught between aluminum supports for the legs. I had another dog that was afraid of birds, I think he was killed somehow, but I went out of town for a few weeks, and when I returned my wife told me she had given him to someone. I just figured that was her euphuism for ‘another dog got killed,’ and didn’t ask any questions. I know we had a couple more but can’t remember how they went?

    Ye Gods.

All of my pets lived to a ripe old age.

Nothing to contribute on slinging, but I remember the site Foot posted coming up before. It's good.

Hehe, that's rather funny since most people kill other people intentionally with guns/blade weapons. It'd be a deplorably laughable situation for someone to be intentionally killed by a sling.
