Thread: Tattoo design

    Default Tattoo design

    Hi all.
This isn't really that EB-related but I thought here would be a good place to ask.
I'm planning on getting a tattoo in the next few months to symbolise my love for music as well as my love for ancient and classical history (a by-product of playing EB since 0.7). So, naturally, I want to get an Apollo tattoo. I want him to be unmistakably Apollo, but all the paintings/statues of him depict the god with not many clothes on and I'm worried, as a straight man, that it might look a little gay to have a naked man perminantly marked on my flesh. Would it be un-Apollo-like for him to be dressed in a way which is a little less effeminate?

I was thinking of giving him a beautiful hoplite's helmet and maybe even a linen cuirass, but he would still be holding a lyre and would have the sun as his background and I possibly even give him a bow and quiver. So would that be a complete bastardisation of the deity?

Another thing I was thinking about was whether I could get something written in ancient Greek underneath it, maybe something to do with music or art in general as I am an avid musician.

EDIT: I also think that this conventional representation of Apollo misses the point of my historical interests which, being EB-influenced, are primarily military.

    Hey man,
it´s your body and your live. if you think apollo must be naked - make him naked. if someone ask for it - tell him your story. stay true, because i think you have your personal reasons why you do this.

(for example my modest story: i played shogun for years. i most like the traditional japanese Zen-shakuhashi music, the thinking of bushido and japanese art. this game opened this world for me.
by the time, one of my legs is tattooed with a grizzled samurai defending themself from arrows and a koi. also i organised last year an zen-shakuhachi-concert in my town.
all persons how ask i tell the story of a computergame called shogun.)

    greets

Don't get a tattoo. They're so trendy. Why do you need to prove to everyone you like music or history with something "badass?"

    what!
even if you play eb, you see some painted or tattooed unit´s. it´s not because it´s trendy. even ötzi was tattooed.
sure it´s much more commercialized today, but i think there no real "posers" in this forum.

Lobf, if you don't like tatoos dont get them, don't cuss out others who do just because it's not for you, each to their own, no need to be so narrow minded.

"Don't get a tattoo. They're so trendy", what?

    Anyway back OT

I'll post here because I didn't want to make a thread about it, but I am also planning on getting a classical themed tat and would like some nice imagery to work from if anyone could help.
My plan is to get a (preferably Athenian but its not a deal breaker) 3rd century hoplite in battle panapoly, on my left upper chest.
If anyone could either post up an image or link me to a good reference (Osprey images would be good if someone can vouch for accuracy?) for hoplites I would be very appreciative

    BTW @ Laevex
That tat idea sounds nice as mate, where are you planning on getting it done? And if the naked version means more to you than censored, get the naked version, as others have said, your body, your tat, your design, if you're worried about what others think you're getting a tat for the wrong reason. Besides, I don't think an unclothed version of a Greek God is anywhere near as "gay" as some tats I've seen, for example my (gay) friend's tat on his back....it says "Men working at rear" with a large arrow pointing to his nether-regions

    Cheers

Sorry, you're right. To each his own. I just really don't like the things. that's not to say I don't know people with cool tattoos or that I dislike people with them. I just have reasons for personally not liking them. And there I go being a jerk again...

Thanks for all the advice. I feel a lot more confident getting this done now. I feel that as long as it means something important to me, the design is completely my own.

I guess about the size of my hand on my side, just above the hip. I'm pretty sure I want it black and grey too.

You're friend's tattoo sounds fun. But seeing as I also want this tattoo embody my love for historical warfare rather than simply history, I think I would prefer him to be wearing some sort of military regalia. Maybe a sort of representation of Alexander as Apollo, which is reasonable as my name is Alex.

Also, this is a type of comment which has no point at these forums. If you want to tell people that they could be attracted to people of the same sex, go play WoW or something.

Oh, I didn't know you read xkcd, Foot.

BTW, Apollo never really wears armor - not part of his iconography.

Honestly though, how is the god of pestilence and art effeminate? That's just metal. I suppose you could do the Flaying of Marsyas by Titian.
