Naval invasions by the AI are very rare in RTW, and most of the time when it uses ships to transport troop it does so to reinforce an overseas province that it currently holds, not to attack a province held by another faction.
In BI, the AI is more navally aggressive and fairly often lands troops on provinces held by other factions - although if an alternative land route exists, it will still probably prefer to use that. Unfortunately, most of the landings are made with smallish armies that are all too easily driven back to their boats.
I have no experience from the Alexander expansion so can't comment on it.
They happen in BI, but they're useless. You get a string of pathetic invasions that never cease.
Apparently in Alex they're much better, because the AI actually makes an effort to combine stacks.
It began on seven hills - an EB 1.1 Romani AAR with historical house-rules (now ceased)
Heirs to Lysimachos - an EB 1.1 Epeiros-as-Pergamon AAR with semi-historical houserules (now ceased)
Philetairos' Gift - a second EB 1.1 Epeiros-as-Pergamon AAR
Yeah, it's pretty much like Conqueror said. With RTW, the AI will only rarely use naval invasions, mostly to reinforce a province or threatened area. With BI the AI is generally quite aggressive, including with naval invasions. This means the AI will actually use units to invade enemy lands from the sea. Also to protect threatened areas, of course. With ALEX, the AI is somewhat smarter and will mostly use naval invasions to protect a threatened area, sometime even attack.

RTW: they rarely, if ever happen. period. lol
BI: The AI will use AI naval invasions in an aggressive "offensive" way. The earlier in the game and poorer the faction, the easier it will be to drive back foes. Some factions however, like carthage (after about 20 years) will regularly invade you lands with full-blown, elite stacks and cause headaches for decades. You seriously will have to build a navy to remain competitive and prevent regualr invasions by the AI. It does add a new dimension and force you to rethink the way you spend money (because those navies ain't cheap)
Alex: The AI uses the invasions in a much more "defensive" manner. It will typically only ship troops to defend overseas holding it feels are threatened by you. You can actually see it bolster its overseas lands with multiple stacks to prepare itself for an invasion by you, which is great strategy. And so long as it has overseas holdings threatened by you, it will continue to ship troops VERY AGGRESSIVELY! Don't think that Alex is necessarily easier on you, because the AI will throw everthing it has to protect its lands from you. However, once you completely kick the AI out of an area, he won't take an "offensive" posture and re-invade or try to make an invasion on your lands. That is the one downside of Alex... he won't actually "invade" you.
For example, in the 1st punic war, when you first take messana, the carthaginians will land massive stacks in libelo in preparation for a final battle there, but once you conquer sicily, they won't try to re-take it unless there is a rebellion. The same in iberia... they will send every unit they have to iberia so long as they have some land there to defend, but once its gone, the naval activity stops.
so BI is much better for this i guess... so the Casse arent as safe as they are in RTW.exe... hmmmm
well how do i get EB to work with BI then?

I've noticed a few happening in rtw.exe, but only against rebel provinces, and then only island ones (Krete springs to mind)
Well, the KH army in Krete is actually there from the beggining of the campaign. If you are any faction except the KH, the army (led by a guy named Areus Agiados Lakedaimonios) will just stand there and do nothing. Only with Alex have I seen them being transported to Lakonike in order to defend Sparte when threatened by the Makedones.

That happened with me, I was utterly destroying them as the Romani, they broughtover that Army and promptly besieged Tylis. They only had 3 cities left, so I forced them to become my protectorate, on the condition that they pay me 5000 a year for 10 years, and any new conquests are given to me. They had already sent a small army over to Krete, nd were besieging that, so I let them have it.
I saw the Lusotannan invade the Balearics with RTW.exe.
With BI.exe that Greek army on Crete will try to besiege Kydonia and will come back to the mainland if it's needed.

Well, it won't. I've played numerous campaigns on BI.exe and all they've ever done with that army is, well, nothing. Even after Areus dies, the army will remain there, until I decide to invade Krete.

RTW.exe, and I just FD them over, and have them as Type III govs, until their 10 years of probation is over, then I'll see. At least, that's what I would have done. They have since declared war on me, so I'm going to (once I've destroyed them) bleed them dry, give all their settlements to me, execpt Sparta, and get them to pay me 40k a year for 10 years. then we'll see. I'm a cruel bastard when it comes to foreign policy.
Well thats is how I play my campaign too, as the Romani of course. usalyy I dont destroy a faction but reduce it to its capital and another city. For example, in my Second Punic war, where the Karth-hadast landed an army near Messan awas a very long war from 214 to 196 BC, I forced the Karth-Hadast to accept my rigid terms for peace. They where only to have Carthage itself and Attika, pay me 1000 mnai per turn and I give all their former holdings in North Africa to Saba, I kept Adrumentum, Ippone and Sica. The Epirotes are my protectorate, and have been very good allies, but of course sooner or later they are going to be attacked by Macedon. They send two full stalkes to besige Pella, ( they lost it in 258 BC after the men himself, Pyrrios captured it in 270 ), they where defeated and lost another in a battle between Epidamnos and Pella. Now they are in deep sh>>>>t, and if attacked by the Koinon Hellenon, which I notice usally ship troops around the Adriatic only to be send to the bottom by pirate ships, or the Macedons ,their will be no excuse for Rome's intervention, after all we will be only protecting our allies on the order of the Senate.

So, am I reading this right? The alx AI will never invade, never try to take land from me? So if I stay peaceful for 200 years, I'll never be attacked? Am I really reading that right?
I hope it is not stupid like the Naval invasions in Medieval total war II.
with stuff like the Moors landing in northern italy to attack me playing as milan, while they are getting attacked by the kingdom of sicily, the eqygt, Portugal and spain.
Or getting invaded by full stacks of Spanish or portuguese armies, while playing with scotland/england, while their countries are getting conquered by the moors

If the AI doesn't invade other lands, then I assume the other factions will never spread, never attack each other, and remain in their starting areas unless you interfere? That could be a serious problem, I'd think, what with the Gauls being nice to each other and the seleukids having no threat from their supposedly dangerous borders.
I am sorry for an off-topic question, but how are the protectorates orkin for you guys (Reno Melitensis, Che Roriniho)? I have tried it once in 0.81v2 (VH/M) and I have been flooded with cash because all the money my protectorate got from EB money-assistance script and the VH campaign bonus it immediately transfered into my chest each turn. I have fond it rather boring and unrealistic being paid like 20 000 mnai each turn by a singlr poor protectorated province.... So what are the protectorate effects in this regard in your campaigns?
