    Default Looking through the RV

When I don't have the time to fire up the game and play, but still have a moment to spare, I like to play with the RV. While looking at the Seleucids I noticed something odd. It seems like Medium Phalanxes are recruitable throughout Gaul and eastern Iberia. Is there some historical rationale for this or just an oversight?

    Cheers

Probably to show a possible greater greek/successor future expansation? with klerouchoi settlers as backbone of a colonisation... but not sure

    Description Klerouchoi Phalangitai
'"The answer was the establishment of Hellenic military-settlements throughout the Successor states, where a soldier was given a plot of land and reduced taxes. Sometimes they were given some slaves too, to work their alloted land, freeing up more time for the Klerouchos soldier to be on campaign. Arming the native population (Aigyptioi in the Ptolemaic kingdom, Syriakoi and Babylonioi in the Seleukid Empire), was less appealing, as that would have laid the Makedonian dynasties open for native revolts in their respective heartlands. In Aigyptos most Klerouchoi were settled in the Fayum depression, but many others were settled further to the south, though in smaller numbers."

Makes sense, it seems like the Ptolies have the same setup. I'm just curious as to why Gaul and Iberia could be colonized in this way when other places, much closer in fact, could not.

Ah, exactly this crossed my mind yesterday looking at the RV...

The Ptolemies and the Seleukids can recruit Klerouchoi Phalangitai in Gaul, in eastern Spain and in Numidia. They cannot, however, recruit them in Hellas or Italy.

The Makedones and the Epeirotes on the other hand can recruit them only in a few provinces. For example Sardis and Ipsos, Antiocheia and Sidon. But not in Damaskus on the other hand.

    Really confusing...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Klerouchois west of Greece don't matter, because neither Seleukids nor Ptolemies can set up a Type II government there. Klerouchoi Phalangites are only recruitable from a factional MIC 4.

No, Klerouchoi and Pezhetairoi need MIC level 3, Argyraspides need level 4.

And Massalia will be a western stronghold of hellenism with it's Expansion marker for various hellenic factions.

For Pontos, Baktria and the West-Greeks Klerouchoi represent the wholesale takeover of earlier Ptolemaic or Seleukid military insitutions. Historically, Pontos did indeed do such a thing.
