Do I have to buy the VI expansion pack to use the XL mod?
If so, what mod(s) are best for vanilla?
And, please excuse the xtreme n00b question, how do I add a mod - where is a list of steps for a computer novice?
Thanks!

You need VI for the XL mod. There is an early version of the medmod that works without VI, but on the whole you're better off getting hold of a copy of the VI expansion.

You do need Viking Invasion for just about every mod available, including XL. As Cynwulf pointed out, the only known exception is that early version of Wes' MedMod. Virtually all other mods require VI.Originally Posted by jsberry
I'll second him as well in urging you to find a copy of Viking Invasion (that, or a copy of MTW Battle Collection or MTW Gold/Eras Edition, which includes both the original game and the expansion pack). VI is worth getting just for what it adds to the game, never mind that it will also allow you to play all the mods available.![]()
Most mods these days come with a self-installer, so you can install them just like you would the regular game. And the few mods that do not come with a self-installer usually include instructions on how to add them.Originally Posted by jsberry

It seems that a lot of people have trouble getting hold of VI these days. I still see it and the gold edition in the shops here all the time.

I envy you, then. Perhaps the UK has a stronger PC-gaming tradition than here in the States?

Thanks. At this stage, the only challenge is figuring out how to complete and save a turn before I get a CTD. Does VI reduce CTD problems?
