I think the HRE is probably too strong for a 3 way game. France and England have a natural animosity which could allow the HRE, with it's near limitless eastern expansion options, a massive advantage. There's a reason why all the early rush attempts used the HRE to start.

Spain at least starts weaker than both of the others and has a more difficult road to expand, especially since all the richest cities they can reach are in Italy, directly contesting French power.

I also voted HRE. I could see it turning into a massive rush game and HRE could guickly gather their military and try to take Italy or more Eastern provinces. Meanwhile, although Spain is weak, whilst England and France fight it out Spain will have an oppurtunity to build up. Although this might be an advantage it is tuned down because of the relentless attacks from the Moors/Portugal. Also I'd like to see how Crusades would work. Would we have to agree whilst on Crusades, not to fight any Christian faction, no matter if we are at war with them?

Ok, it's pretty clear that the HRE is out.

Regarding Crusades: I'm playing as the Pope, so I can issue out-of-game commands on Crusades calling for cessation of hostilities against Crusading factions.
