Question The wonders of RTW diplomacy

This is the first time that I had this happen to me after playing RTW for about 3 years (on and off)

All I did was deploy massive ammounts of infantry in northern Italy to counter the Roman agression and bleed them out while another force would go for Roma itself. Then all of a sudden out of the blue..or fog of war.. a Roman diplomat aproaches me with this interesting proposal.

After I agreed, a Roman assault attacked me from all sides, excluding from behind.

    Is this normal?

Nah, that's normal for RTW. The AI diplomacy is a wreck, in any case, and is separated of the campaign AI (the one that makes the moves on the map).
    So, yeah, it does happen.

At least they didn't come to you, ask for 90 gold, and threaten to attack if you didn't.

It makes sense when you turn it around. Don't attack us or we will counter-attack.

This has occured to me sooo many times (weird AI diplomacy), I've just grown sick of it... Like one time I had 2 elite armies attacking Pontos, repeatedly hammering everything they threw at me until I had bled their citie's population dry and leaving them with only their capital standing, when they send a diplomat asking me for all their previous cities back, plus one city of my own and within their own interest (Nikaia), plus an amount of mnai close to 100,000 and in return a ceasefire. Now who wouldn't accept such a generous offer?

P.S. I've found that FD isn't exactly the solution, but it improves gameplay a lot.

I got no idea what the creators fo this game were smoking when they decided to make the diplomacy AI and campaign AI seperate...Diplomacy is directly related to campaign AI.

If only I knew how to force diplomacy

EDIT: Hope they dont make the same mistake in empire:tw.

Could be an explanation, but still remains somewhat strange when they are sieging your cities and rolling with full stacks through your lands....

I love that message. I get it at least once a campaign.

I got that message in 'vanilla' RTW a lot.. in EB this kind of message is rare.. once or twice per campaign ..
I don't know what is different because they both use the RTW engine

Actually, I gave this a little thought and it actually does make some sense. So obviously the Romans weren't expecting your attack, as you aren't in their immediate concern. Despite that, they do posses some strength as to oppose you so basically they plead you to retreat your forces and not attack them, or they will attack you. So ''accept (please do not attack) or we will attack'' makes some sense, even though it can't be clearly said because of the restrictions of RTW diplomacy.
